InfiniBand Switch |
Semi-annually to annually, supplied with Exadata Storage Server |
(1) Exadata systems running Oracle Database 12c Release 1 (12.1.0.1) apply the standard Grid Infrastructure Patch Set Update (GI PSU) released as part of the quarterly CPU process for planned maintenance.
(2) Recommended Grid Infrastructure and Database patch bundles for Exadata are released quarterly, aligned with and including the database Critical Patch Update (CPU) and Patch Set Update (PSU) releases. The quarterly patch bundles are targeted for planned Grid Infrastructure and Database patching activities and are the only patch bundles that will be applied by most customers. All patch bundles are cumulative.
For the most recent Oracle Database patch sets, Oracle may make interim patch bundles available on a monthly or bimonthly basis, also. Most customers will install these only if they are recommended by Oracle Support to address a specific issue that is fixed in an interim patch bundle and the customer cannot wait for the next quarterly release containing the fix. Interim patch bundles provide faster response for specific issues and are expected to contain fewer fixes than quarterly releases.
Grid Infrastructure and Database patch bundles for Exadata are produced until the patching end date for a given patch set, as described in <Note 742060.1>.
(3) For information about the Lifetime Support Policy for Exadata and Oracle Database software, refer to Oracle Software Technical Support Policies.
Recommended Versions
The recommended version depends on the state of deployment and may not be equal to the latest release specified in the Current Versions table below. The general guideline is the following:
- All software should be updated regularly. Maintaining software at current or recent releases provides the following benefits: better software security, more stable sustaining releases, continued compatibility with newer related software, better support and faster resolution of issues, and ability to supply fixes for newly discovered issues.
- Run the latest exachk and review the MAA Scorecard section for version recommendations. Exachk evaluates current software versions for consistency, compatibility, and whether or not it is current.
- Systems in production or late testing stages before production should plan to periodically adopt more current software. It is not required or necessary to install every new update, but the installed software should not lag the latest update by more than 12 months.
- A software update should be installed on a production system only after it has been validated in a proper test environment, and no less than one month after release to allow field experience to solidify. However, if the system requires a fix that is available in a newer version, then plans to adopt a newer version should be accelerated.
- Systems that are in the early stages of testing before production or proofs-of-concept should adopt new updates as they are made available as indicated in the Current Versions table below.

11.2.3.2.0: Oracle Linux Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel (UEK) default on database servers
- Beginning in 11.2.3.2.0 database servers use Oracle Linux Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel (UEK).
- You may switch to the non-UEK Oracle Linux kernel as a separate post-installation or post-upgrade step. Refer to the Exadata release README for instructions.
- To switch back to UEK see <Document 1524411.1>.
11.2.3.1.0: Database server updates delivered through the Unbreakable Linux Network (ULN)
- Beginning in 11.2.3.1.0 database server updates are delivered through the Unbreakable Linux Network (ULN). Database server updates are no longer delivered via the minimal pack.
- Updates via ULN require populating and maintaining a yum repository for Exadata. See <Document 1473002.1> for details.
- Database servers must be running Oracle Linux 5.5 before updating with ULN. To update the kernel package and other key software components on database servers from OL 5.3 to OL 5.5, refer to <Document 1284070.1>. Systems originally deployed with 11.2.1.2.6 or earlier will run OL 5.3 unless the steps in <Document 1284070.1> have been performed. Minimal pack installation during upgrade does not update OL 5.3 kernel package.
11.2.2.2.2: Minimal pack installation will update the database server Oracle Linux kernel package
- For Exadata releases 11.2.2.2.2 through 11.2.2.4.2, minimal pack installation will update the database server Oracle Linux kernel package to the current release for systems that are already running the 2.6.18-194 (OL 5.5) or later kernel.
- Systems that were initially deployed with Exadata 11.2.1.2.6 or earlier and run the 2.6.18-128 kernel (OL 5.3) will not have their kernel package updated during minimal pack installation.
- To update the kernel package and other key software components on database servers from OL 5.3 to OL 5.5, refer to <Document 1284070.1>.

Oracle Solaris on 2-socket (X4-2, X3-2, X2-2) Database Servers
General guidelines for running Oracle Solaris on Exadata Database Machine
- 12.1.1.1.1 is the terminal version that supports database servers running Oracle Solaris. Note that storage servers may run a version higher than 12.1.1.1.1 while connected to database servers running Oracle Solaris.
- Oracle Solaris is supported only on 2-socket database servers (e.g. X3-2). 8-socket database servers (e.g. X3-8) must use Oracle Linux.
- Database servers may be updated to a later SRU than what was originally installed.
- Oracle Solaris package version number is obtained with command "pkg list entire".

Exadata Software
Before upgrading, see the Requirements for Exadata Feature Usage section in this document for software requirements that may necessitate pre-upgrade patch application to other software in order to support specific Exadata features or patch application methods.
Image Version and Date Code
The image version for a release, as shown by the "imageinfo -ver" command (e.g. 12.1.2.1.1.150316.2), consists of three components:
- Product version (e.g. 12.1.2.1.1)
- Date code in YYMMDD format (e.g. 150316)
- (optional) Oracle-internal build number (e.g. 2)
In most circumstances it is sufficient to reference a release only by the product version (e.g. 12.1.2.1.1). However, upgrade planning must consider both the product version and date code of the installed and target releases. Upgrade to an Exadata release is allowed under the following circumstances:
- The product version of the target release must be higher than the installed software, and
- The date code of the target release must be higher than the installed software.
For example, consider a system with image version 12.1.1.1.2.150411 installed, which consists of product version 12.1.1.1.2 and date code 150411:
- Upgrade to 12.1.2.1.2.150617.1 is allowed because both rules are satisfied.
- Upgrade to 12.1.2.1.1.150316.2 is not allowed because date code 150411 of the installed software is higher than date code 150316 of the target release.
Exadata 18
Before updating to Exadata 18 from Exadata 12.1 or lower review the following in the Supplemental README:
- Included software updates (e.g. UEK4 and InfiniBand switch software)
- Virtualized (OVM) database server update ordering requirement
- Virtualized (OVM) database server Grid Infrastructure requirement
- ACFS UEK4 requirement
Confirm Enterprise Manager management infrastructure requirements before upgrading to Exadata 18.1.0.0.0 or above. See <Document 1626579.1>.

11.2.3.3.1 (revised 2014-Jul-17; superseded by 12.1) |
<Patch 19166601> - Storage server and InfiniBand switch software <Patch 19681934> - Exadata 11.2.3.3.1 patchmgr plug-ins <Patch 18876946> - Database server ULN exadata_dbserver_11.2.3.3.1_x86_64_base channel ISO image
|
Supplemental README <Note 1667414.1>
11.2.3.3.1 was re-released in <Patch 19166601>, which supersedes patch 17636228. The original cell image version supplied in patch 17636228 was 11.2.3.3.1.140529.1. The new cell image version supplied in <patch 19166601> is 11.2.3.3.1.140708.
Please review the following guidelines:
1. The revised 11.2.3.3.1 Exadata Storage Server software release (<patch 19166601>) contains only changes to cell software. It is installed in the same manner as previous Exadata releases using the patchmgr utility. There are no changes to database server or InfiniBand switch software.
2. Exadata Storage Servers currently running 11.2.3.3.0 or earlier that will be upgraded to 11.2.3.3.1 should ensure <patch 19166601> is used for storage server upgrade, not patch 17636228.
3. Exadata Storage Servers already running image version 11.2.3.3.1.140529.1 should upgrade to image version 11.2.3.3.1.140708 using <patch 19166601> at the earliest opportunity. Image version is obtained by running the "imageinfo -ver" command. Upgrade to 11.2.3.3.1.140708 is a standard out-of-place cell upgrade, which will replace the inactive image version with 11.2.3.3.1.140529.1. After successful upgrade to 11.2.3.3.1.140708, rollback will be possible only to 11.2.3.3.1.140529.1.
Minimum version required for use with Oracle Database 12.1.0.2.
An alternative is to install interim cell <patch 18980463>, however the impact to the environment will be similar to using patchmgr to install the re-released 11.2.3.3.1. Using patchmgr to install re-released 11.2.3.3.1 will have much lower administrative cost and risk compared to applying interim patch 18980463.

Oracle Database and Grid Infrastructure
The information in this section applies to more than one Oracle software release.
Automatic Fix Control Persistence
The Automatic Fix Control Persistence feature for database optimizer fixes is supplied starting with bundle patches 11.2.0.4.20 and 12.1.0.2.160719. Database optimizer fixes applied via an interim patch and enabled when a bundle patch containing the same fix is applied are now automatically enabled, unlike previous versions. See <Document 2147007.1> for details.
Version Numbering Format
As of November 2015 the version numbering for new Bundle Patches, Patch Set Updates and Security Patch Updates for Oracle Database, Enterprise Manager and Middleware products changes format. The new format replaces the numeric 5th digit of the bundle version with a release date in the form "YYMMDD". See <Document 2061926.1> for details.
Oracle JavaVM Patch Set Update (OJVM PSU)
- In CPUOct2014 and later, OJVM PSU is a new Patch Set Update for Database versions 11.2.0.3, 11.2.0.4, 12.1.0.1 and 12.1.0.2. It addresses OJVM security vulnerabilities. Refer to <Document 1929745.1> for OJVM PSU details.
- For RAC deployments, as of Jan 2017 the OJVM PSU patch may be installed in a RAC Rolling manner under certain situations. Refer to <Note 2217053.1> for additional details. OJVM PSU patch is installed separately from the standard PSU patch (e.g. 12.1.0.2 Database Patch for Engineered System, or 12.1.0.1 GI PSU, or 11.2 Exadata BP).
- Combo OJVM patches are intended for environments that take a single downtime to apply all patches.
- Monthly Exadata bundle patches that do not correspond with a quarterly CPU release use the most recent quarterly OJVM PSU. For example, Exadata DBBP 12.1.0.2.8 (May 2015) uses OJVM PSU Apr 2015.
