Purpose

Provide additional information for ILOM hang issue

Details

Integrated Lights Out Manager (ILOM) can become temporarily unresponsive.

Type

Defect

ireport.chassis.sp.restart

Severity

Minor

Description

A process running on the service processor (ILOM) may occasionally "stall", resulting in the service
processor (ILOM) to temporarily hang and become unresponsive, while it's actively being used.

A software fix is planned for SW1.1 release, which is anticipated by Nov 2017.

The "watchdog" mechanism is a timer that is used to provide a forward progress capability if the service processor hangs.

When the service processor (ILOM) hangs for more than 30-seconds it will cause the watchdog timer to trigger,
thereby resulting in only the service processor to be reset.

The service processor will take approximately 2 minutes to fully boot after the reset.

The service processor will be unresponsive during this reset and reboot process.

The combined time for the watchdog timer and to fully reboot the service processor will take 2 minutes 30-seconds.

The user/admin will need to re-establish the connection to the service processor when this process completes.

i-reports are generated when the service processor is reset due to the watchdog timer.

Reset reason = watch-dog

These can be observed via the fault management shell.

Reference Oracle BugID: 26178319

Automated Response

The system will attempt to recover the service processor (ILOM) hang by initiating a watchdog reset.
The service processor will automatically boot after the watchdog reset.

Impact

There is no impact to the host operating system during the reset of the service processor.
The service processor will be unresponsive during the time the service processor is reset and rebooted.

Suggested Action for System Administrator

There is no workaround available at this time.

A software fix is planned for SW1.1 release, which is anticipated by Nov 2017.

The admin/user will need to re-establish connection to the service processor after the service processor completes the reset and reboot process.
