Information in this document applies to any platform.
Purpose
It is recommended to review the ID files and identify any drives with 100 million meters on the roller sub assembly before installing this microcode. These are the drives most likely to have a stuck roller. You may want to upgrade these drives in stages and then load an unload a tape in them if there is a large number of drives to minimize the number of down drives the customer experiences due to stuck rollers. The remaining drives that are under 100 million meters do not need to be upgraded in stages.
List the changes of problems addressed in the 4.12.106 microcode. Note - It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED to load and unload a tape in each drive that is upgraded to these code versions before they are put into production to see if the drive has a stuck roller.
Reference KB 2251787.1 discusses 3F2E errors. This is the error you will get if the code detects a stuck roller on a drive. Once the drive posts a 3F2E error it will no longer load tapes. .

3F2E
Changes made to detect and down any drive that has a seized or stuck roller in the tape path. Detection for this is measured and logged by the drive/s for each unload/unthread operation of each tape. T2 or T1 media,

3F21
Add a check of the shape of the pes histogram to determine if a head oscillation is indicated. If we see a high pes sigma and a head oscillation is present the drive will not be downed with a 3f21. A serious head oscillation will cause other problems which would result in the drive being replaced for perm write errors.

Changes made to remove distance from Media warranty and end of life calculations along with subsequent reporting to host/applications/library etc.

4.11.111 Fips Certification Fixes issue where drive does not enter Maintenance Mode if a CRC error is detected with an FPGA image in EEPROM during IPL. This replaces special build RB411111 code. Note: this was a test-only scenario and is not a functional code risk.
