Sun Ray Operating Software is applicable to Solaris 10, 11.x and Linux 5.x, 6.x. Applicable to Sun Ray Series 2 (P8), 3/3i (P10) and 3Plus (P9) only. Not applicable to Sun Ray 1 (Obsolete) series.

Purpose

This document will assist with installing the NEW Sun Ray Operating Software (SROS) 11.1.7

Scope

This document applies to anyone who administers/maintains Oracle Sun Ray software in a Solaris 10.X/11.x or Linux 5.x/6.x environment.

Details

This procedure explains how to download and update Sun Ray Clients with the NEW Sun Ray Operating Software, version 11.1.7.

Note: The Sun Ray Operating Software 11.1.7 should be installed on a Sun Ray server running Sun Ray Software 5.4.5 (Patch xxxxxxxx) for best results, but can be installed with SRS 5.4.4, 5.4.3, 5.4.2, 5.4.1, 5.4, 5.3.2, 5.3.1 or 5.3. May work with lesser Sun Ray releases but expect less functionality.
The error message, Error: Unknown firmware module type (magic number="3badbeef") may be displayed if you try to install the firmware on a previous Sun Ray Software release.

About SROS 11.1.7

   1. From a web browser, go to the My Oracle Support site and login. https://support.oracle.com
   2. Click on the Patches and Updates tab.
   3. In the Patch Name or Number field, enter the Patch ID from the table above.
   4. Select the Platform type from drop down list: Ex Oracle Solaris 10 (64 bit)
   5. Click Search.
   6. Click on the desired patch, select Download.

Install Sun Ray Operating Software (SROS)

1. As an administrator within a terminal shell on the Sun Ray Server, unzip the downloaded Sun Ray Operating Software zip file.

Note: This action will create sros_11.1.7.0 directory.
# unzip p25029006_111_Generic.zip

2. Change to the new directory, sros_11.1.7.0 and run the 'utfwinstall' utility.

Note: This action will create /opt/SUNWutdfw/lib/firmware directory.

# cd <path>/sros_11.1.7.0
#./utfwinstall

Installing Sun Ray Operating Software 11.1.7.0
Sun Ray Operating Software 11.1.7.0 has been successfully installed.
This output has been logged to
    /var/adm/log/utfwinstall.<date>.log

3. Populate /tftpboot directory so Sun Ray Clients can have access to new firmware.

Important Notes:

1. This command will install **NON** GUI (stop m) firmware. This is chosen for security reasons.  If GUI firmware is required, Administrators are advised to also implement step 4, below.

2. New firmware will append to existing firmware in /tftpboot. This is because there might be some custom firmware and firmware for the older Sun Ray 1 clients. It does not install new firmware for discontinued Sun Ray 1 clients.

5. Run the utfwadm utility to instruct each Sun Ray Client to be upgraded during next power cycle.

# /opt/SUNWut/sbin/utfwload -L

Administrators may verify individual Sun Ray Clients have received the new firmware using the following actions:
  • Run the command /opt/SUNWut/sbin/utfwload -Ha,  or
  • Use the "Stop + V" key combination on a Sun/Oracle keyboard,
(or 'ctrl pause V' for other type keyboards.)

Reference: Troubleshooting SROS Updates

A few reference pointers for frequently reported issues.

Verify tftp Service

Should Sun Ray Clients fail to upgrade, confirm the 'tftp' service is online.  (Solaris only)

# /usr/sbin/svcs -a | grep /network/tftp
online Aug_03 svc:/network/tftp/udp6:default

If offline, this service can be enabled by:

# /usr/sbin/svcadm enable /network/tftp/udp6:default

Verify .parms File

Should a Sun Ray Client fail to upgrade, Administrators are advised to check the /tftpboot directory on the designated firmware server to see if there is a specific *.parms file for that client  (e.g. CoronaP9.<client mac>).

If that .parms file contains references to older firmware, it will prevent the Client from being upgraded.   To resolve this behavior, remove this client-specific file so the Client will read the main CoronaPx.parms file that contains the upgraded firmware, and revisit the steps above.
