Purpose

Oracle is standardizing on Oracle Hardware Management Pack (OHMP) fwupdate utility(included with Solaris) for updating Service Processor software from the HOST.  Beginning with T7 platforms, we are not shipping  'sysfwdownload' utility with Service Processor firmware releases. Note that the ILOM web server(BUI) and CLI "load source" methods to load system firmware will still be available.

Scope

This information will be needed by anyone responsible for updating system firmware

Details

Oracle, provided a standalone Solaris binary, sysfwdownload, for loading Service Processor firmware from the host. This standalone utility is platform specific, running only on SPARC T-Series, and was originally developed and released for severs many generations ago. Starting with the T7 series it will no longer be provided. This standalone utility is not included in any Solaris distribution and as such, required the customer to locate and download separately onto each machine that it wants to run it on. The documentation on the 'sysfwdownload' utility only existed in the form of a README file that is part of the download.

Oracle Hardware Management Pack (OHMP) provides a unified utility, fwupdate, that is available as part of standard Solaris distributions, runs on both x86 and SPARC servers running multiple host OSes (Solaris, Linux, etc.), is fully documented in Oracle documentation (link), that allows updating of Service Processor firmware from the host. The 'fwupdate' utility is actively being maintained and enhanced to support the needs of platforms going forward.

Info on fwupdate utility can be found in the Oracle Server CLI Tools User's Guide
