Purpose

This note illustrates how to setup event log entries to track informational, warning, or error messages for managed devices via the ILOM GUI V3.0/V3.1 on BDA servers.

Details

 Background

The ILOM event log enables you to view information about any event that occurred on the system.  Some of these events include ILOM configuration changes, software events, warnings,  alerts, component failure, as well as IPMI, PET, and SNMP events.

The Event Log tracks informational, warning, or error messages about managed devices such as the addition or removal of a component or the failure of a component.  The properties of the events recorded in the log can include: the severity of the event, the event provider (class), and the date and time the event was logged.

For more details see:

1. The section on "ILOM Event Log" in the System Monitoring and Alert Management documentation.

2. The section on "Manage System, Event, and Audit Log Entries" in the Oracle® ILOM Getting Started Guide Firmware Release 3.2.x documentation.

Note:

1. Admin (a) role privileges are required to set this up in the Oracle ILOM.

2. Event Types differ between ILOM Versions.

Detailed Steps

There are basically 4 steps to follow:

  1. Set up event type filters.
  2. Set up email notifications.
  3. Check the email notifications when an event is triggered.
  4. Check the event logs after an event is triggered.

Set up event type filters

The example here sets up event type filters for:
Power
Chassis
Storage
Audit

To do so:

1. Navigate to the Event Custom Filter page.

Log into the ILOM as admin and navigate as below.

a) In  the V3.0 ILOM.

System Monitoring > Event Logs > Filter dropdown > Custom Filter

An example ILOM V3.0 default "Event Log" page looks like:

ilom1

b) In the V3.1 ILOM.

ILOM Administration > Logs > Event > Filter dropdown > Custom Filter

An example ILOM V3.1 default "Event Log" page looks like:

ilom11

c) Navigating to the "Custom Filter" looks like:

ilom2

2. Use the "Custom Filter" to set up the required events.

a) Select the "Custom Filter".

b) View the  "Custom Filter" screen. Note the required fields are Event Class, Event Type, Severity.

ilom3

c)  Fill out the "Custom Filter" based on required Event Class, Event Type, Severity.  When finished, select "OK".

d) After selecting "OK" see "Custom Filter Applied".

ilom9

3. Based on the example events the following could be setup.

a) Power Events:

i. For Power On.

Event Class: Power
Event Type: On
Severity: Major

See:

ilom4

ii. For Power Off.

Event Class: Power
Event Type: Off
Severity: Major

See:

ilom5

iii.  For Power Cycle.

Event Class: Power
Event Type: Cycle
Severity: Major

See:

ilom6

iv. For Power Reset.

Event Class: Power
Event Type: Reset
Severity: Major

See:

ilom7

b) Chassis Events:

Event Class: Chassis
Event Type: Action
Severity: minor

c) Storage Events:

Event Class: Storage
Event Type: Fault
Severity: Major

d) Audit Events:

Event Class: Audit
Event Type: Action
Severity: Minor

Set up email notifications

1. Navigate to the SMTP Client Settings.

a) In ILOM V3.0:

Configuration > SMTP Client Settings

b) In ILOM V3.1:

ILOM Administration > Notifications > SMTP Client

2. Fill in the SMTP client settings.

a) Fill in by setting the fields:

SMTP State: Enabled

SMTP Server: <SMTP server IP or Hostname >
SMTP Port: <SMTP server port>
Custom Sender: <name.example.com>

b) A completed "SMTP" Client Settings" page looks like:

ilom8

c) Select: Save

d)  You can send a test email to send a one time test email to an address to verify the SMTP configuration.

i. Fill in the one time test email address to verify the SMTP configuration is working.  For example:

Test Email:
Address: <One time test email to this address to verify SMTP configuration worked.>

ii.  Select:  Send Test

3. Email will look like:

The email subject line:

<host>-ilom:Test:Test:major

The email body:

--SMTP TEST MESSAGE-- This is a test of the smtp client

Email Notification when events are triggered

Once an event is triggered you will receive a notification regarding the event.   In the case of the "Power" events above, performing a power cycle will trigger an email notification that looks like:

The email subject line:

<host>-ilom:Cycle:Power:major

The email body:

/SYS has been cycled by: Web session

Event logs when events are triggered

Once an event is triggered you verify it in the "event log".  In the case of the "Power" events above, performing a power cycle show an event in the "event log" with Class of Power, Type of Cycle, Severity Majory, Description: /SYS has been cycled by: Web session, like:

ilom10

To see the Event log navigate as follows:

a) In ILOM V3.0:

System Monitoring > Event Logs > Filter: All Events

b) In ILOM V3.1:

ILOM Administration > Logs > Filter: All Events
