Purpose

Software updates for Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance provide additional features, bug fixes, and occasionally security updates, thus allowing your storage environment to run at peak efficiency. A software update is a binary file, which is the same for all supported platforms, that contains new management software as well as new hardware firmware for your storage controllers and disk shelves. Please carefully review the appropriate release notes below prior to updating. For details about the latest and supported versions of the service processor (SP) BIOS firmware and Oracle Integrated Lights Out Manager (Oracle ILOM) for your platform, see Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance: How to check the SP BIOS revision level (1174698.1). Also, additional Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance related software is available for download at the Oracle Technology Network.

Downloading and Installing a Software Update

IMPORTANT: Do not attempt to open/unpack/decompress the .zip file inside your Oracle ZFS Appliance system archive.

1. Verify your current software version.
   * In the BUI, go to Maintenance > System.
   * In the CLI, go to "maintenance system updates" and enter "show".
2. Read the appropriate release notes to understand the impact on your storage environment. If your software is older than the most recent supported version as described in "Minimum Fully Supported Software Version per Product," also review the release notes from all appropriate previous releases for additional information. The release notes also detail which Oracle ZFS Appliance platforms are supported by that software update. Note that not all platforms properly appear in the "Applies To" section above.
   
3. To avoid overfilling the system disks, it is recommended that you retain no more than two software updates, which avoids error message "Insufficient Space" when downloading an update. For more information, see Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance: Insufficient Space Error Reported on Appliance Kit Code Download (2290139.1).
4. Download the [PATCH_ID].zip file to a local filesystem accessible from your desktop.
5. Unzip the downloaded file, which creates the directory ALL_Supported_Platforms.
6. In the newly created directory, locate the software update file with the [PACKAGE].pkg.gz file name.
7. Update your appliance with that file by following the procedures in the current online help on the appliance. You can also reference the white paper Best Practices for Upgrading Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance.

Minimum Fully Supported Software Version per Product

The following are the minimum and recommended versions of software fully supported on each product. If your software is older than the most recent supported version, please review the release notes from this and previous software releases to determine whether you may be affected by any of the issues addressed or can benefit from newly added features. If so, we recommend updating to the most recent supported software version listed for your product. Some products are supported by more than one current software release. 

Notes:

• 7420, 7320, and 7120 systems support both 2011.1 and 2013.1 releases.
• Prerequisite for systems running software version earlier than 2011.1.4.2:
  You must first upgrade to 2011.1.4.2 before upgrading to the minimum software version.
• The following upgrade paths to software version OS8.7.18 (2013.1.7.18) or OS8.6.15 (2013.1.6.15) are the minimum supported:
  • 2013.1.2.0 > OS8.7.18 (2013.1.7.18) or OS8.6.15 (2013.1.6.15)
    
  • 2011.1.4.2 > 2011.1.9.4 > 2013.1.2.0 > OS8.7.18 (2013.1.7.18) or OS8.6.15 (2013.1.6.15)
    
• Minimum fully supported version is the oldest version with full support. Older versions may not contain critical support features or may be incompatible with newer hardware. To ensure compatibility, update your software to the minimum fully supported version.
  
• Recommended version is the oldest version for which critical security and/or data loss bugs will result in the release of an additional micro to address the issue. Fixes for software versions prior to this are on an exception basis.
• The current version is fully supported and contains all available performance, reliability, and feature enhancements.
• Clustered products are supported, but not specifically listed.
• If you have questions about a specific bug fix or feature, your software is older than the minimum listed for your product, or you are uncertain whether an update is supported on your product, please contact us through My Oracle Support (MOS).

Independent Licenses

• Remote Replication and Cloning may be evaluated free of charge but require independent licenses when used in production on systems purchased after September 13, 2011. For more information, contact your Oracle Sales Representative.
• The Encryption feature may be evaluated free of charge but requires an independent license when used in production. For more information, contact your Oracle Sales Representative.

Notification for Changes to This Document

The following procedure sends an email notification when any document you have marked as a "favorite" is updated.

1. Click the "favorite" star by the document title.
2. Click the Settings tab and select "Hot Topics Email."
3. In the Hot Topics section and for delivery options, choose to send emails with the selected options.
4. Select a frequency and format.
