Purpose

Awareness for the next leap second insertion, scheduled for June 30th, 2015 at 23:59:60 UTC (as per IERS Bulletin C 49).

Details

Leap seconds are a periodic one-second adjustment of Coordinated Universal Time(UTC) in order to keep a system's time of day close to the mean solar time. However, the Earth's rotation speed varies in response to climatic and geological events, and due to this, UTC leap seconds are irregularly spaced and unpredictable.

The NTP protocol can be used to sync time with most modern devices, automatically making the leap second adjustment. The following StorageTek tape products support NTP:   SL150, Oracle HSM, OKM, STA, MDVOP, VSM6, and VLE.

All other tape products not using NTP, like SL8500, SL3000, 9x40, T10K and VSM4/5 are not exposed.

The NTP protocol can be used to sync time with most tape product software, using the Solaris or Linux OS.
