Standard Storage Profiles for Release 6.1.x of the Oracle FS-1 Storage System
Applies to:
Oracle FS1-2 Flash Storage System - Version All Versions to All Versions [Release All Releases] Information in this document applies to any platform.
Purpose
This document provides information on the standard Storage Profiles provided with the FS1-2 Flash Storage System. These Storage Profiles were considerably revised as of Release 6.1.3. The profiles are listed by application category and the detailed Quality of Service and preferred Storage Classes are listed for each profile.
Scope
This document is intended for Storage Administrators and Oracle support personnel involved in the installation or configuration of the FS1.
Details
These are the standard performance profiles as of Release 6.1.3, with their QoS parameters and Storage Class preferences as shown in the Oracle FS System Manager GUI. Systems that are upgraded to this release without a System Reset may have additional deprecated profiles, or profiles where the QoS parameters or preferred storage classes are not the same as those in this release.
- Initial Release 6.1.2 changed the names and QoS parameters of several profiles and deprecated other profiles. Existing user volumes created on releases lower than 6.1.2 are not modified on the upgrade to 6.1.2 to match the newer recommended parameters. New volumes created on release 6.1.2 will have the QoS parameters in the table below but may not have the updated preferred Storage Classes of release 6.1.3. Systems which were reset on the upgrade to 6.1.2 will only have the newer profiles as noted below but new volumes created on release 6.1.2 will have the QoS parameters in the table below but may not have the updated preferred Storage Classes of release 6.1.3.
- Controlled Release 6.1.3 changed the Storage Class order of preference on several profiles to those in the table below. Existing user volumes created on releases lower than 6.1.3 are not modified on the upgrade to 6.1.3 to match the new storage class preferences. New volumes created on 6.1.3 or higher will have the storage class preferences below.
- See FS System: Migrating User LUNS Created on FS1-2 Release 6.1.2 or Below to the Standard Storage Profiles of Release 6.1.3 for how to migrate existing volumes to match the updated preferences.

Type Application |
Name Performance Profile |
RAID Level1 |
Read Ahead2 |
Priority3 |
Stripe Width4 |
Writes5 |
Preferred Storage Classes6 |
RAID Level -- RAID Protection Level1
Any given drive group may contain user volumes with multiple RAID types.
- Single - Single Parity - RAID5
- Double - Double Parity - RAID6
- Mirrored - RAID10
Read Ahead -- Read Ahead Strategy2
As a host read is processed, additional sequential data reads are performed internally to bring subsequent LBA ranges into Controller cache based on the presumption the host will also be reading that data.
- Normal - Normal, no read ahead
- Conservative - Moderate read ahead
- Aggressive - Maximum read ahead
Priority -- Quality of Service Priority3
QoS Priority is a combination of the internal resource allocation and queueing priority and the physical striping of data across drive groups. User volumes will be striped in equal increments across the optimal number of drive groups if free space on the optimal number of groups is available. If the system does not contain the optimal number of drive groups for a QoS priority, the user volumes will be striped across the available groups, which reduces the spindle/SSD count and may result in less than optimal performance for the selected profile. If there is not enough space on the optimal number of drive groups, the system may have to stripe volumes across more than the optimal number. In either case, if additional storage is added, the system will present the option to re-stripe the data across the added drive groups.
- Premium - Optimal striping 8 Drive groups
- High - Optimal striping 8 Drive groups
- Medium - Optimal striping 6 Drive groups
- Low - Optimal striping 4 Drive groups
- Archive - Optimal striping 4 Drive groups
Stripe Width -- Optimal Number of Drive Groups4
The Auto setting means the system will attempt to place user volumes on the optimal number of drive groups for the QoS priority if equal increments of free space are available. The All setting means that the system will stripe user volumes across all available drive groups in the available Storage Class and Storage Domain.
- Auto Auto-select - Based on QoS Priority and number of groups available
- All - Stripe across all available Drive Groups in the Storage Class and Domain. Increased risk of access contention unless applications and domains are carefully managed.
Writes -- Write Caching5
WB stores host writes in Controller Flash Backed Memory on the buddy, and returns a positive response to the host before the data is flushed to the drive groups. WT stores host writes on the drive groups before a positive response is returned to the host.
- WB - Write Back - Use Flash Backed Memory
- WT - Write Through - Bypass Flash Backed Memory
Preferred Storage Classes6
As volumes are created, the system will place the volumes on the preferred storage class if it exists in the system. If that storage class does not exist, the system will place volumes on the next storage class as listed in order of preference for the specific profile.
- CapDisk - "Capacity Disk" - Hard drives optimized for lowest cost per byte
- PerDisk - "Performance Disk" - Hard drives optimized for higher performance
- CapSSD - "Capacity SSD" - SSD drives optimized for lowest cost per byte
- PerfSSD - "Perormance fSSD" - SSD drives optimized for higher performance
