Information in this document applies to any platform.

Purpose

This document will provide the firmware and procedure for upgrading the T5-4 and T5-8 A261 PSU's in the field. The firmware is intended to resolve known issue with  part number 7068817 Power Supplies (PSU)  where  POWER CYCLE FAULTS T5-4/8 PSU & CAN'T BE CLEARED.

The failure mode is that if one of the PSUs loses AC input for 30s then it can go into a persistent fault state with fault LED on and no ILOM fault logged; PSU reseat alleviates the persistent fault condition. Permanent fix requires PSU FW upgrade.

Scope

Current released firmware is on MOS  (SPARC T5-4+T5-8+T7-4 Hardware Programmables 1.0.7, patch number 23750155).

IMPORTANT NOTE: If system are running ILOM 4.x and higher, use SPARC T5-4+T5-8+T7-4 Hardware Programmables 1.0.7.A (patch number 26964018) instead.

Proactive replacement of PSU 7068817 without trying FW upgrade is not allowed. If PSU fails to upgrade replace it with PN 7081596

SPARC T5-4+T5-8 Hardware Programmables Version: 1.0.3  <== Previously released and is now Obsolete!

SPARC T5-4+T5-8+T7-4 Hardware Programmables
Version: 1.0.7
Location: Firmware/Hardware_Programmables
Keywords: FIRMWARE: SPARC T5-4 T5-8 T7-4 HARDWARE PROGRAMMABLES
Synopsis: FIRMWARE: SPARC T5-4 T5-8 T7-4 HARDWARE PROGRAMMABLES 1.0.7

Details

The following procedure (example from HW Programmable 1.0.3, see README file on newer version)  must be used to install the PSU firmware:

The firmware installation script is designed to be run with system powered up and running

The script will poll each power supply and only upgrade those that need it.

The script automatically tries the upgrade up to three times if an attempt is unsuccessful. If a PSU does not upgrade successfully, replace the PSU with PN 7081596, don't run the script again

Proactive replacement of PSU without trying FW upgrade is not allowed

The script will provide output of the status of each PSU upgrade( examples later in this document)

The method shown using the "load source" syntax is the only method supported

It is a prerequisite for the customer to provide a location to place the image( .pkg file) on a local or network share or on a TFTP, FTP, HTTP or HTTPS server  just as with any system firmware upgrade

Copy/download the zip package (p19357923_10.zip) to a local area

Unzip the bundle.  (unzip p19357923_10.zip)

Read the README file in: (p19357923_103/README.html)

Copy the Hardware Programmables package to an http/tftp server accessible to the customers' SPARC_T5-4 or SPARC_T5-8 system(s).

There can not be an existing fault on a PSU for the script to succeed with it's upgrade. Reseat the PSU by removing it and replacing it in the backplane to clear any faults

On the ILOM service processor,  using the ILOM CLI change to the /SP/firmware/backupimage directory    **This is a very important step ** :
          cd /SP/firmware/backupimage/

On the ILOM service processor, load the package on your System from the /SP/firmware/backupimage directory :
        load -source http://0.0.0.0/you_localpath/Hardware_Programmables/Hardware_Programmables-1.0.3-SPARC_T5-4+T5-8.pkg

On certain ILOM releases ILOM will print “ILOM will now be restarted with the new firmware.” at the end of the installation. This message can be ignored; ILOM does not need to be restarted.

During the upgrade process the following output will be observed.  Do not power off the system or interrupt the update as permanent damage to one or more power supplies may occur.

Are you sure you want to load the specified file (y/n)? y

This may take up to 40 minutes. Do you wish to continue (y/n)? y

    Updating /SYS/PS0...................................................................................................................done

    Updating /SYS/PS1...................................................................................................................done

    Updating /SYS/PS2...................................................................................................................done

    Updating /SYS/PS3...................................................................................................................done

    Firmware update is complete.

ILOM will now be restarted with the new firmware.

Also you will notice the fans will go to full throttle

LED state will be AC input (right PSU LED) "solid on" and OK (middle PSU LED)in a "fast blink". These are the two right most green LED's. See LED's in handbook. After successful upgrade the two LED's will be "solid on"
