Sun StorageTek VSM5 System - Version All Versions to All Versions [Release All Releases]
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Purpose

Within the VSM5 product is an IUP (microprocessor) preference algorithm.
This algorithm attempts to evenly distribute work across the available IUPs within the VSM product.
This is done primarily for the purpose of optimizing performance.

In order for the hardware configuration to work well with the IUP preference algorithm the following recommendations should be followed:

Details

VCF card population:

In VSMs with only 4 interface cards (VCF cards), as in the VSM5e product, the VCF cards should be populated as follows:

CU.1.VCF00,
CU.1.VCF03,
CU.1.VCF10 and
CU.1.VCF13.

RTD Configurations:

Where possible, RTDs should all be configured on all the top ports or all the bottom ports of the VCF cards.
Similarly, the host CHPID connections should be configured on all the top or all the bottom ports of the VCF cards.

Not all configurations can adhere to this RTD configuration guidance due to the number of RTDs being configured.
In those cases, if feasible, least used RTDs should be configured on the top or bottom ports where the host CHPIDs are configured.

This RTD configuration guidance is also documented in the VSM5 Installation and Maintenance Guide in the section titled “Configuring VCF Cards for Nearlink Use” (starting on page 52).
