Patch Testing and Application Guidelines

  1. Read and review Exalogic Document ID : 1638835.1 - Exalogic April 2014 PSU - 2.0.3.0.6 (Linux - Physical - Exalogic X2-2, X3-2) Infrastructure Upgrade Guide, for patch installation instructions, known issues and special notes.
  2. Validate patch installation on the TEST system.
    1. Apply the patch to the TEST system that is of equivalent capability and configuration as the PRODUCTION system.
    2. Evaluate technologies and practices that may reduce downtime and risk
    3. Automate steps to reduce human error.
    4. Define, document, and test fallback procedures required if a patch must be rolled back.
    5. Before and after patch application, perform healthchecks using Exachk script to verify software, hardware, and firmware versions using the Document ID : 1449226.1- Exachk Health-Check Tool for Exalogic
  3. Validate patch functionality on the TEST system.
    1. If applying the patch to address a specific issue, verify that the patch provides the functionality desired.
    2. Verify there is no performance, availability, or operational regression while running workload that is representative to that which runs on the PRODUCTION system. This requires comparing metrics captured before and after patch application on the TEST and against metrics captured on the PRODUCTION system.
  4. Apply the patch on the PRODUCTION system.
    1. Test application functionality with load if possible
    2. Before and after patch application, perform healthchecks using Exachk script to verify software, hardware, and firmware versions using the Document ID : 1449226.1- Exachk Health-Check Tool for Exalogic
