Purpose

This document outlines the top non-hardware issues our customers encounter on the Sun Fire X4450 Server, with the firmware version which fixes that issue or the workaround

Unable to install Solaris 10 Update 5

Solaris 10 Update 5 installations process fails with panic 

Workaround
- At the grub menu press 'e' to edit, then highlight the 'unix' line and 'e' again, and append '-kd' and return; then 'b' to boot with those changes.

- At the kmdb prompt, type:
cmi_no_init/W1
:c
- Continue with install (choosing Text Mode due to 6668806). Choose 'manual reboot' if given the option.

Disabing Quick boot in BIOS will cause server to reboot in loop.  This happens after a cold boot and if server has more than 16GB memory

Workaround: Load optimal defaults in BIOS.

Resolution: Update ILOM/BIOS firmware to latest version.

Ipmitool FRU print command returns no information   Resolution: Update ILOM/BIOS firmware to latest version.
Excessive "fake" ACPI messages in logs

Logs will show messages similar to the following, when there is no power state change actually.

1087 IPMI Log critical Fri Jun 5 03:15:14 2009 ID = 27f : pre-init timestamp : System ACPI Power State : ACPI : S5/G2: soft-off
1086 IPMI Log critical Fri Jun 5 03:14:56 2009 ID = 27e : pre-init timestamp : System ACPI Power State : ACPI : S0/G0: working

Issue fixed in ILOM 3.0.3.30 build r44534
Resolution: Update ILOM/BIOS firmware to latest version.

VMware ESX hangs  This is due to memory scrub operation.

Note: This issue is most commonly seen with VMware ESX installations but the update is recommended for all installs.

Resolution: Update ILOM/BIOS firmware to latest version.
