Purpose

This document outlines the top non-hardware issues our customers encounter on the Sun Fire X4170 M2/X4270 M2 Server, with the firmware version which fixes that issue or the workaround

SymptomDetailsResolution/Workaround
Server unbootable after upgrading ILOM/BIOS without upgrading RAID card firmware first

  System became unbootable when ILOM upgraded from SW1.3 to SW1.6/SW1.7 without first upgrading the RAID card.

Workaround is to downgrade the ILOM/BIOS back to SW1.3 or previous version used then upgrade the RAID card firmware before upgrading ILOM/BIOS again.

ipmitool commands return "BMC not responding"

Memory leaks cause ILOM to cause strange faults from the hardware that may be false.

Workaround: Reset ILOM regularly

Resolution: Update the system with the latest system firmware release 

Power supplies get faulted during power on or power off

Resolution: Update the system with the latest system firmware release

ILOM turns on the system fault LED, and the system will not boot showing no output

ILOM snapshot may show either "Memory : BIOS : Configuration Error : MRC error Major 0xE8"
Message ID displayed in FMA is: SPX86-8001-ME

Workaround: Perform a complete power cycle of the system by removing the AC power cords for several minutes
Resolution: Update ILOM firmware to latest
