Solution: Update the system's firmware to the latest released version.

This issue was addressed by the BIOS update in firmware release 2.6.3 which provides BIOS 07.06.03.07

Installation of Windows Server 2008 R2 Stalls During the "Completing installation..." Phase.

Sun Fire X4170, X4270, and X4275 Servers when installing Windows Server 2008 R2 may stall at the "Completing installation..." phase of Windows setup.  The mouse will still respond, but no progress is made and the installation will not complete.  If the system is restarted, setup will be incomplete and must be restarted.

Update Ethernet Controller driver during the installing Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2.
The required updated driver is included on the Tools and Drivers (T&D) DVD for server Software 2.1.

Also included on the T&D DVD is an AutoUnattend.xml file and the following instructions:

  • How to copy the AutoUnattend.xml and driver files to a USB thumb drive (or similar removable-media drive)
  • How to use the USB thumb drive to replace the in-box Ethernet Controller driver during the installation of Windows Server 2008 R2

The instructions are in the following directory on the T&D DVD: \windows\w2k8r2\drivers\readme.html.

System comes up with 2 less CPU threads or 1 core missing

System comes up with 2 less CPU threads or 1 core missing i.e 14 procs visible to the OS instead of 16. Sometimes this also causes a watchdog NMI panic similar to that in the bug.

Workaround: Reboot or power cycle and it will come up normally with all 16.

Resolution: Fixed in SW2.4 BIOS

Solaris cannot install if boot drive with root / is >1TB.

Solaris 10 10/08 and OpenSolaris 2008.11 cannot be installed to a boot drive or root / volume that is >= 1TB.

Workaround: Create RAID LUNs or disk partitions that are smaller for root and use the rest of the large disks for data volumes.

Solaris hangs during automatic jumpstart install

Solaris selects default console as serial ttya for hands-off automatic jumpstart installs, and the SP serial Virtual UART may lose communication.

Workaround: Install via jumpstart interactively with video/keyboard mouse using ILOM Remote KVMS.

Resolution: Fix available in SW1.4 ILOM 2.0.2.22 or SW2.1 ILOM 3.0.6.10.

Update to latest ILOM BIOS verion
