Purpose

The Sun Storage 2500-M2 Arrays come with an optional Performance Enhancement license. The license does not require additional hardware, but rather, implements enhanced firmware algorithms to improve performance. The license may be activated for a free 90 days evaluation from the licensing utility within Sun Storage Common Array Manager (CAM). This document identifies what you can expect for a performance improvement given your configuration and application.

Scope

Usually, performance is enhanced by the addition of faster hardware. This is not the case with the Performance Enhancement License. Firmware algorithms are fine tuned to meet the special requirements of specific configurations and applications. When your configuration fits the design specification of the feature, there will be a noticeable performance improvement. Three factors influence the increase you can achieve.

  • Whether the I/O is Random or Sequential.
  • The block size of the I/O request.
  • Most Importantly, the number of disk drives in the array.

Use the following graphical representations of "Performance (iops) vs Disk Drives" to see if the Performance Enhancement License is right for you.

Details

WCE = Write Cache Enabled
CME = Cache Mirroring Enabled
CMD = Cache Mirroring Disabled
Turbo = When the Performance Enhancement License is installed
Base = Without the Performance Enhancement License
