Purpose

 This article describes activity required by a System Administrator to verify whether action has to be taken on a External I/O Expansion Unit loss of input power.

Scope

 This document is intended for System Administrators and support personnel.

Details

Auto Service Request (ASR) provides automatic failure detection and SR creation for Oracle SPARC systems.  See http://www.oracle.com/us/asr/index.html for more information on ASR. This particular ASR event has created a Draft Service Request (DraftSR). DraftSRs require manual verification in order to determine whether further action by Oracle Service is required.

Description of the ASR Event:

Power supply events can be both transient or persistent. They can be generated by external changes and actions most notably by the removal of AC from a power supply.

Additional checks need to be performed in order to understand the cause of this ASR event.  If a persistent failure has occurred the DraftSR needs to be promoted into a formal Service Request for further investigation. Alternatively if power event or events cannot be explained by changes on the supplied power or work being carried out on the machine then this DraftSR should also be promoted into a formal Service Request.

If the event has been been caused by changes in site power or a similar event then no action need be taken and the DraftSR will automatically close in 30 days.

Please find an example ASR alarm at the bottom of this document.

How to verify if there is a genuine Power Supply issue:

Step 1: Identify the system that experienced this ASR Alarm.

To view information on which of your systems is reporting the error condition:

1. Log into My Oracle Support
2. Click on "Service Requests" in the menu area
3. In the "Draft Service Requests" section, look in the 'SR Number' column for the Service Request Number of the Draft SR, as supplied in the Draft SR notification email. The affected Product, Serial Number, and Asset Name will be displayed on the same row as the Draft SR ID.

Step 2: To verify that a power supply has a persistent failure.

Example 1:

Log on to the XSCF of the platform and run the 'showstatus' command.

XSCF> showstatus
IOU#1 Status:Normal;
PCI#2 Status:Normal;
IOX@X73U Status:Normal;
* PS1 Status:Faulted;

Example 2:

XSCF> fmdump -m
   MSG-ID:

   Refer to http://www.sun.com/msg/

IOXSCF-8000-TR

 for more information.
   AUTO-RESPONSE: No immediate action is taken
   IMPACT: If both power supplies lose power, the hardware is unavailable.
   REC-ACTION: Check AC input power for failure. If this error is the result of
   improper removal, insure that a "ioxadm poweroff" is issued before future PSU shutdowns.

Use the fmdump command with the Event-ID option to retrieve more information on the fault which has occurred.

A physical investigation of the faulted Power Supply needs to happen to check for a disconnect of power to the Power Supply.  An example of this is a loose or disconnected AC input cable, or a tripped breaker.  A local electrician maybe needed to help determine the cause.

 Step 3:

If a failure is not persistent, no further action is required.  The DraftSR will automatically expire in 30 days.

If the failure has been verified as persistent or is a cause of concern, proceed with the steps to promote the DraftSR into a formal Service Request:

  1. Log into My Oracle Support
  2. Click on "Service Requests" in the menu area
  3. In the "Draft Service Requests" section, look in the 'SR Number' column for the Service Request Number of the Draft SR, as supplied in the Draft SR notification email
  4. 'Problem' of the SR Create process will already have the Problem Summary, Problem Details and information pertaining to the Product and Configuration pre-populated
  5. Validate that everything is accurate and all required fields are input.  Click Next.
  6. 'More Information'  Select "Power Issues will not power on" from the pull down menu.
