Information in this document applies to any platform.

Purpose

Sun/Oracle Systems utilize a wide variety of Disk Controllers, primarily SATA/SAS in recent models. Unless you happen to already know, It can often be very difficult to tell what controller your system has.
This document will list out which Sun/Oracle X86 systems use what Internal Hardware RAID Controllers, what utilities they use, and where to get software and firmware for them. It will also link to some useful Docs that you can use to help you determine which disk controller or HBA (Host Bus Adapter) you have in your particular system.

Scope

While many of the controllers listed may also be used in Sun/Oracle SPARC systems and Storage Arrays (Several of which are based on Sun/Oracle X86 Systems), this document will deal primarily with Sun/Oracle X86 Systems.

All Sun/Oracle Systems have optional External SCSI/SATA/SAS HBA options for connecting various external storage devices. This document will also deal primarily with the Internal controller's only. Internal Disk components and HBA's are supported by the Platform Hardware Teams (SPARC or X86 Platforms), while External disk arrays and HBA's are supported by the Storage Team. If you are not sure what product or what Support Group you need assistance from, please contact the Oracle Customer Access Services (CAS) group and they will assist you.

Details

How do I tell which Disk Controller/HBA I have in my X86 System?

There are several different ways, depending on the Host OS and System Model, to determine which SAS HBA you have installed in your system.

Original Order Paperwork - The original paperwork that came with the system will usually contain model and part information about the hardware installed in it.

From POST (Power On Self Test) Summary - viewable on a VGA monitor connection, the ILOM's Remote Console, or the ILOM's Serial Console. At some point during POST, any SCSI/SAS controller that loads as Option ROM will present itself during POST. The devices may readily identify themselves during this period, or you may need to look for identifying information which you can search for more information on. Manufacturer names, Model #'s and Firmware #'s are good bits to look for.

From the BIOS Boot Priority Menu - You may find some clues to the identity of a Disk Controller here.

From the ILOM - see KM#1518344.1

From the OS -

SOLARIS - grep /etc/path_to_inst and look for what SCSI driver is installed. There are several possible options depending on what disk controller you have. The following are the most common:

mpt - "Message Passing Technology" SCSI/SAS driver. Supports numerous controllers including the LSI SCSI/SAS and the Adaptec based "StorageTEK SAS RAID HBA&NEM (Cougar&Coyote)

aac - "Adaptec AdvancedRAID Controller" driver. Supports numerous Adaptec RAID controllers

mr_sas - LSI MegaRAID 92xx driver. Supports SGX-SAS6-R-INT-Z ("Niwot-INT") and SGX-SAS6-R-REM-Z ("Niwot-REM")

mpt_sas - LSI SAS2 driver for the LSI SAS2008 Supports the SGX-SAS6-INT-Z ("Erie-INT") and "SGX-SAS6-REM-Z  ("Erie-EM")

lmrc - LSI SAS3 driver for the LSI/Avago SAS3108 SAS3 RoC. Supports the 7086209 ("Aspen")

iostat-En - iostat will often contain clues in the Vendor information. The "Niwot" SAS HBA will identify itself as an "MR-9261-8i". The Adaptec based StorageTEK RAID will identify itself as "SUN STK INT"

Also See KM#1382886.1

LINUX - grep lspci -v for things like "sas", "mpt" "lsi", "adaptec", "aac", "aacraid" Also see KM#1382848.1

WINDOWS - Look under the "Storage Controllers" tree in Device Manager (go to start->run-> type "devmgmt.msc"). Also see KM#1382879.1

 Internal SAS HBA's by Generation

SCSI, SAS and SATA/SAS controllers can be broken down into 3 basic categories by generation: SCSI 320 and older, SATA/SAS 3Gbps (1st gen) and SATA/SAS 6Gbps (2nd gen, often referred to as "SAS2").

NOTES Since this controller does not support JBOD/simple volumes, in order to use it with software volume managment (SVM, ZFS, LVM, Veritas VM, etc) you must first create a raid 0 volume for each disk.
NOTES This part is a CRU(Customer Replaceable Unit) which Oracle has determined can be replaced or installed by anyone. It is a FRU (Field Replaceable Unit) when installed in Engineered Systems (I.E. Exadata, Supercluster, etc)

NOTES LSI's Oracle Products download site may often contain more recent versions of software and documentation than is available on the latest T&D CD's

"Erie-INT" and "Erie-REM" have a 2 Logical Volume limit which can contain up to 12 physical disks max.
If you have more physical disks than this, they must be configured as JBOD/Simple

This controller is very suitable for use with other Volume Management Software such as SVM, LVM and ZFS

[1] There are numerous External SCSI HBA's available for this system. Many of them have internal connectors, but they are not used for any Internal configurations. They are used only for external connections.

[2] Optional software implemented NVRAID Hardware RAID 0 and 1 is available under Windows only when the appropriate drivers and software is installed. NVIDIA "MediaSheild User's Guide" v6 - us.download.nvidia.com/Windows/nForce/9.46/NVMediaShield_UGv6.pdf

[3] The NMS's X5-2M is a special case system. While It uses the same standard Aspen-INT SAS HBA used in other X5 systems this component is NOT a FRU OR CRU in this system. Should the SAS HBA in these systems become faulty it should be replaced by ordering the whole system FRU P/N# ONLY. do NOT manually select the Aspen-INT P/N# from another system.
