Pillar Axiom: Windows Server 2008 Best Practices to avoid loss of LUN access We have seen cases where Windows server hosts lose access to their LUNs due to unhealthy SAN (bad SFP, cable, switch ports) and not having the latest patches and configuration from Microsoft.
Our current recommendations for Windows Server 2008, Server 2008 SP2, Server 2008 R2, and Server 2008 R2 SP1 are: - Install the following fixes: KB 2522766 - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2522766 KB 979743 - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/979743 - Configure the MPIO timers discussed in http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee619749(WS.10).aspx as follows (the values are in decimal): HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\mpio\Parameters\UseCustomPathRecoveryInterval (Set this to 1, decimal base) HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\mpio\Parameters\PathRecoveryInterval (Set this to 15, decimal base) HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\mpio\Parameters\PDORemovePeriod (Set this to 30, decimal base)
-Install the latest version of Oracle FS Path Manager 4.0 (FSPM) from the following Oracle website: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/server-storage/san-storage/downloads/index.html The current FSPM version is 4.0.3 (as of November 2014). The registry changes and FSPM installation/upgrade need a reboot to take effect.
Also, if you encounter loss of LUN access, verify the errors on your switches (clear the stats and perform a SAN Health over 24 hours). It is recommended to open a Service Request with your switch vendor Support. SAN Stats of the Axiom ports can be monitored on the Axiom GUI: - R5: Monitor tab -> Slammer Protocols: double click on each port to view their stats. - R4: Health tab -> SAN Protocols: click on each port to view their stats.
