280R/V480/V490/V880/V890 - Administration Serial Console

Full details available see:

These servers have 3 options for connecting to the Administration Console to collect data to diagnose a problem

  • ASCII Terminal attached to Serial port A
  • A telnet session to the configured RSC Card
  • A PCI Frame Buffer Card ( Least Desirable since it requires a working PCI card, and PCI Bus which are sometimes the cause of the hardware being diagnosed )

Serial Connection
You can use any of the following devices with a DB-25 serial port to connect as the administration console:

  • ASCII terminal
  • Workstation
  • Terminal server (or a patch panel connected to a terminal server)
  • Personal computer running a terminal emulator application
  1. Confirm that the following settings have been made for software on the administration console.
    • Baud Rate    9600
    • Data length  8 bits
    • Parity             None
    • STOP bit        1 bit
    • Flow Control None
    • Delay             Other than 0
  2. Connect the management console to the serial port on the of the system

The 280 Has a DB-25 Connector on the rear of the system.

The V480 and V490 have an RJ-45 Connector on the rear and require a cable adapter to convert RJ-45 to DB-25.  PN 530-2889

V480Serial

The V880 and V890 have a DB-26 Connector on the rear of the system.

The Remote System Control (RSC) Console

Installation and Configuration:

The RSC Console is implemented through a separate card installed in the system.  That card contains a processor and memory and can boot it's own operating system.  Once that operating system is running it allows a telnet network connection that can be used as a remote console into the Sun Fire 280R/V480/V490/V880/V890 that it is installed.   The RSC is also capable of other administrative functions.  See RSC Command Quick Reference Guide (Doc ID 1006030.1) for a more complete list of commands available.

The RSC is set up through the Solaris Operating environment after Solaris is initially installed on the Sun Fire 280R/V480/V490/V880/V890.

Click Here For detailed installation instructions and product documentation.

Click Here to download RSC 2.2.2

Click Here to Download RSC 2.2.3

Once the packages are installed it may also need to be patched, and since the RSC is hardware with it's own booting environment, it may need firmware upgraded.   See this document for supported RSC and firmware levels:

Sun Enterprise[TM] 250 server, Sun Fire[TM] 280R, V480/V490 and V880/V890 servers: Quick Cross Reference for RSC (Remote System Control) Patch/firmware (Doc ID 1003522.1)

Directing Console Output to the RSC

Once the RSC software is installed and configured the Console output must be directed to the RSC interface from the default which is the Sun Fire 280R/V480/V490/V880/V890 System serial port.

See this document for a description of how to direct console output to the RCS, and if necessary direct it back to the serial port:

Collecting Data For Troubleshooting By Oracle

Collecting the correct data to progress a Service request with Oracle is dependent on the type of problem that is being experienced.  Some problems can be diagnosed with merely the output of a few commands, while others may require additional data such as Explorer, and possibly core files.  The data requirements for some of the more common failure modes on all Sun Hardware is available here:.

Data Requirements reference: What data is needed in order to troubleshoot my software or hardware problem? (Doc ID 1019144.1)

Once on 1019144.1, Click on the link under "SPARC Volume Server Products Issues" for "Sun Fire 280R, V4x0/V8x0" then scroll down to the problem type you are experiencing.
