Purpose

This document refers to options available to reset the SP

Scope

This document provides steps and options to reset the SP

Details

The Service Processor (SP) runs it's own dedicated operating system.  Perform one of the following steps to reset the SP:

#1 From the Service Processor WebGUI:
  Go to the 'Maintenance' tab
  Go to the 'Reset SP' tab

#2 From the SP CLI via "root" account:
  -> reset /SP
  Are you sure you want to reset /SP (y/n)?

===================================================================

Please check and make that the  BMC patch is installed or not, prior to using the ipmitool command since there's a chance for the Solaris HOST to either receive a break signal or panic the HOST.

Please check doc # (Doc ID 1380216.1) BAD TRAP Panic in bmc(7D) or ipmi(7D) Drivers when Service Processor is Not Responding on sun4v SPARC Systems for more details :

Excerpt  from doc #1380216.1- If HOST having the symptoms below:

1) Solaris 10 10/08 or later without patch 147194-03,
2) SP/ILOM is hung,
3) BMC driver is loaded

===================================================================

#3 Using  ipmitool from remote host:
  % ipmitool -U root -H xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx bmc reset cold
  Sent cold reset command to MC

#4 Using ipmitool from the root account on the local host (Please note that patch 147194-03 must be installed for Solaris 10 10/08 & newer otherwise a panic may occur) :
  % ipmitool bmc reset cold
  bmc_send_cmd: Permission denied   <-- Must be root

  % su root
  Password:
  # ipmitool bmc reset cold
  Sent cold reset command to MC

Another ipmitool uses the sunoem functionality, but please note the requires versions of ipmitool which are sometimes not delivered by solaris, document 1516567.1.

  # ipmitool sunoem cli 'reset -script /SP'

#5 Forced a cold boot if options 1 through 4 failed:
  Stop the operating system.  Power system off and remove all power cords for a ~10 seconds.  In the case of blades, stop the operating system and remove the blade from the chassis.

If a resource is available onsite, there are two additional options.

#6 SP CLI via the "sunservice" account on ILOM 2.x:
  [(flash)root@SP_hostname:~]# reboot

#7 SP CLI via the "sunservice" account on ILOM 3.x  (An escalation mode password will be required.):
  [(flash)root@SP_hostname:~]# reboot

You can safely reboot the SP while the host operating system is running.  If the SP is completely hung, the only option may be #5 'Forced cold boot' which will required the operating system on the host to be shut down.  You should also check to see that your SP has the latest firmware.  See "Firmware Downloads and Release History for Sun/Oracle Systems"

T7-x and S7-x only, the sp can be also resetted via the reset button (pin/hole):

- T7-1 : rear, pin/hole left side of net0
- T7-2 : rear, pin/hole left side of net0
- T7-4 : rio, sp text: pin/hole
- S7-x : rear, sp text: pin/hole

The Physical presence buttons is via the locator button.
