Type

Hardware Fault
   device.fan.tooslow

Severity

Major

Description

Fault due to the rotation speed of a fan (including fans in fan trays or in PSUs) being either lower than its predefined threshold or a fan has stopped completely.

Automated Response

The system will react as follows:

- A box has two fan cooling groups; one group is formed by PSU fans only, and the other group is formed by the remaining fans.

- If the fault is due to a failure of a fan and if the other fans in the cooling group are operational, then this cooling group's fans are raised to full
speed and the speed of all other fans in the box are raised to high speed.

- If this is the second fan in a cooling group to become non-operational, then the XSCF driver is used to send a shutdown request to all
  domains in this box.

- If domains ignore the shutdown request the system will experience overtemperature events.

Impact

In all other cases, nothing is deconfigured.

Indicted Hardware

The fan, fan tray, or PSU are marked for replacement.

After the full complement of fans has been restored, including the replacement of PSUs with faulty fans, and once all temperature sensors are back within normal range, the speed of all the fans is returned to normal.

Note - XCP version < 2220 and fan(s) faulted:  RTIF2-140804-001 - When the fan speed is switched due to a change in the intake air temperature, an error log indicating an abnormal fan speed may be erroneously registered for a fan that is not faulty.

Suggested Action for System Administrator

The recommended service action for this event is to schedule replacement of the affected component(s) at the earliest possible convenience. Although the hardware may be functioning, it is not intended nor recommended that the faulted component(s) remain in the system for a prolonged period of time.

Refer to the following document for the latest procedures for displaying event content in preparation for submitting a service request and applying any post-repair actions that may be required.
