PurposeWhat does the "state" of the Virtual Device mean? ScopeThe output of the "show vnic" or "show vhba" command and Oracle Fabric Manager report state and if-state for virtual devices. What do those different states mean? DetailsA virtual device (I/O port and I/O module) has two different states; administrative and operational state. Administrative state is controlled by the administrator of the Oracle Fabric Interconnect chassis and can be set up or down by using the "set" command. Operational state is determined by the environment (cables, switches, etc.). These two states are reported for each virtual device and are separated by a slash. Under normal circumstances a virtual device will report an administrative state of "up" and an operational state of "up" (shown in Oracle Fabric Manager and the Oracle Fabric Interconnect chassis CLI output as "up/up"). If the virtual device state reports "down/up" (administrative state = down, operational state = up) then a Oracle Fabric Interconnect administrator has issued a command to bring down a virtual interface. Likewise a command can be issued to bring the interface back up. If the virtual device state reports "up/down" then something in the environment is preventing this interface from functioning properly. First check the physical port and module that are associated with the virtual device. If the physical port is "down" then the virtual device will not function. A physical port may be down because is has been set down by a Oracle Fabric Interconnect administrator or it may be a problem with the cables or switch connected to that physical port.
