Purpose

Increasing 'VL15Dropped' errors when running the 'ibcheckerrors' command on OVN Chassis. What do they mean and do they indicate any problem?

Details

VL (Virtual Lane) 15 is an SMP buffer dedicated to send and receive of SMP packets (Subnet Management Packets). Note that VL15 transmit buffer is not subjected to flow control. This means that an SMP packet may be sent at a moment when the VL15 receive buffer on the other end of the link does not have the room. In that case, the VL15 receive logic is permitted to silently drop the packet. This is handled by a timeout and retry mechanism by IB Subnet Manager.

So these are just the Management Datagrams (MAD) packets for communication, this doesn't affect the data path (VL0).

You can safely ignore VL15Dropped errors.
