Purpose
Describe the firmware upgrade policy and factory ship versions on the Oracle Big Data Appliance (BDA) M2, X3-2 and X4-2, X5-2.

1. In general customers should not update the firmware of the BDA server components unless instructed to by a MOS Note or by BDA Support. Firmware for BDA server components will be updated during the normal BDA software upgrade process if necessary. The following BDA server components will have their firmware updated during BDA software upgrade if necessary :
- Server ILOM/BIOS
- HCA (InfiniBand card)
- HBA (disk controller)
- HDD
2. There is one exception to the above which is that if a faulty server component is replaced and the firmware of the replaced component is at a lower level than what is normally shipped with the BDA then the firmware must be updated. On every server boot the firmware on that server's components will be checked to validate that they are at least at the level shipped by the factory. If the firmware is below the expected version, bdacheckhw will issue an error/warning. For example, the output below shows a HBA (disk controller) firmware discrepency.

3. Customers can update the firmware for other components of the BDA rack which are not managed by BDA software patching. Components in this category are:
- InfiniBand switches
- Cisco management switch
- PDUs
Note: The recommendation is to update Infiniband switches in BDA racks to at least v2.1.8-1, or preferably the latest tested version v2.2.7-1.

bdaupdatefw
The utility bdaupdatefw updates the firmware of a particular component of a server, such as a replacement disk drive. Run it on the command line as root:
# bdaupdatefw <parameter>
This utility is typically run by Oracle field engineers when installing or replacing hardware components, which may not be factory-installed with a supported firmware version. During a software installation, the Mammoth Utility copies the currently supported firmware to Oracle Big Data Appliance. The bdaupdatefw command uses those files when they are needed to update the firmware of a server component.
