Purpose
The purpose of this document is to assist in the troubleshooting of power supply related alerts for the 7xx0 Unified Storage Appliances.
Please Note: The information in this document is also applicable to ZFS-SA systems deployed within Engineered Systems (Exalogic, Exadata, SuperCluster etc.)
Details
Symptom: Appliance has an amber LED lit for Power Supply/PSU and (or) an alert was received from the appliance indication that there is a failed Power Supply/PSU.
Resolution:
1) Confirm whether you have one of the following faults via:
BUI (browser user interface) -> Click MAINTENANCE, PROBLEMS
or
CLI (command line interface) -> 'maintenance problems show'
SENSOR-8000-3T: External sensors indicate that the power supply 'xxxxxxx/PSU XX' is no longer operating correctly.
SENSOR-8000-7L: A sensor indicates that the power supply 'XXXXXXXXXX/PSU XX' is not operating properly due to some external condition
SENSOR-8000-1N: External sensors indicate that a power supply is no longer operating correctly.
SPX86-8003-73: The enclosure may be getting inadequate power. Subsequent loss of power supplies may cause shutdown.
2) Verify Power Input to the power supply.
If power cord had has been reconnected, but fault remains -> Step 3
If power is corrected after reseating cord -> Finish
3) If the alert ID matches SENSOR-8000-3T, SENSOR-8000-7L or SPX86-8003-73 then this indicates a power issue external to the array.
Impact: The enclosure may be getting inadequate power. Subsequent loss of power supplies may force the enclosure to shutdown.
Experience has shown that these types of messages will show up after a power failure, or after performing some type of main power supply or uninterruptible power supply (UPS) testing. If you believe these alerts are due to these factors, please clear the alarm on the appliance and close out this SR at your convenience.
Check to see if the power cord is connected properly or if there are other conditions that may be causing inadequate power to be provided to the indicated power supply. It may be necessary to replace the power supply if the internal mechanism has failed.
The following steps must be completed in order to determine if the problem is internal or external to the array.
a. Verify that the power supply switch is in the ON position
b. Check that the plug is seated at both ends.
c. Verify that the circuit breaker is on for the rack that the array is installed, and to the side of the rack that powers the power supply.
d. Verify that the rack is getting power for the circuit that supplies power to the power supply
After completing these checks, and finding that the power should be distributed properly, please move to step #4.
4) Verify SP version via:
BUI (browser user interface) -> Click the Sun/Oracle Logo in the upper left corner of the BUI -> 'Service Processor' version is located at the bottom.
or
CLI (command line interface) -> 'configuration version show' -> Service Processor at the bottom
If SP <= 2.0.2.5, these versions contain the SP memory leak bug. It is highly possible that you are hitting bug#6869041. SP version 2.0.2.16 fixes the SP memory leak issue. Please engage a Support Engineer (see steps at bottom) so they may assist you with upgrading the service processor.
If SP >= 2.0.2.16, Then Proceed to Step 5.
PLEASE NOTE: In many cases, the Power Supply alert message may be spurious and a single/isolated occurrence of a sensor error may safely be ignored.
5) Is this a re-occurring failure on this particular PSU location?
Engage a Support Engineer for further diagnosis.
Engaging a Support Engineer
Please update your SR if the proposed solution did not fix the issue, a support engineer will then be assigned to assist.
Without further updates we will close this SR in 14 days.
