Description


The Sun Datacenter Switch 3456 is an Infiniband switch providing a high port density in a single chassis. It is a 3-tier 5-stage switch that can be extended to a 4-tier 7-stage fabric when used in conjunction with the IB NEM

The SDS 3456 can provide up to 3,456 Infiniband 4X SDR/DDR ports presented on 1,152 physical connectors (3 * 4X links per connector)

Each SDS 3456 has slots for 24 Line Cards each providing 48 physical connections in two rows of 24 stacked iPass connectors.

These front-facing Line Cards connect via a passive mid-plane to 18 Fabric Cards which are inserted in the rear of the chassis.

It is a requirement that all 18 Fabric Cards must be present but the number of Line Cards can vary depending on the number of physical ports required.

A chassis with fully populated Fabric Card slots provides a non-blocking switch fabric between all of its ports.

SDS 3456 provides a maximum latency between its ports of 1 usec (less than 200 nsecs per stage) and a throughput of 110 Terabit/sec.

A fully populated SDS 3456 has 720 Mellanox Infiniscale III switch chips each providing 24 ports operating in 4X mode.

 

Fabric Card

The Fabric Card dimensions are 45.5"w x 1.85"h x 14.75"d (1155mm x 47mm x 374.8mm). Each card weighs 31 lb (14 kg) and is inserted vertically into the rear of the chassis. The 18 Fabric Cards connect to the Line Cards via 432 iTRAC connectors on the mid-plane. Each Fabric Card has 8 hot-pluggable cooling fans which draw air through the front of the Line Cards, through the mid-plane, and out through the rear of the Fabric Cards. These fans shift a considerable amount of air and have a significant noise footprint.

Each Fabric Card has three status LEDs (power/fault/locate) and one IPMI system managemnt controller (IPMC).

 

Line Card

The Line Card dimensions are 42.8"w x 1.6"h x 13.3"d (1088.1mm x 41mm x 337mm) and weigh 40 lb (18 kg) each and are inserted horizontally into the front of the chassis connecting with the mid-plane via the iTRAC connectors. A fully populated chassis will have 24 Line Cards providing 24 x 48 iPASS connectors giving a total of 1152 x 3 IB 4X ports.

Each Line Card has three status LEDs (power/fault/locate) and one IPMI system managemnt controller (IPMC). Each physical port has 2 status LEDs (linkup/data).

A single Line Card can provide enough ports for a complete C48 Rack.

 

Power

The chassis can accomodate up to 16 hot-pluggable power supplies configured in two domains each having up to 8 power supplies depending on the Line Card population. A fully configured SDS 3456 can consume up to 36KW
