Purpose

This document provides the reference material necessary to understand and complete the Exadata Preventive Maintenance service program.

Scope

Global support field service engineers and local account teams for Exadata Database Machine customers.

Details

During the second year of service, Oracle will begin a regular Preventive Maintenance (PM) service to ensure the integrity and serviceability of the Exadata Machine. The PM process consists of a machine comparison against the current Exadata Best Practices and will note any deviations. Electronic storage devices with a fixed limited lifetime are also checked to see if they are within their life expectancies, and replaced as necessary. These tasks will be performed on site by the local Oracle Services teams and may be run on a live system. There is no impact on the performance.

If a customer opens an SR for an Exadata that is experiencing battery failures prior to the annual PM service request being opened, then an exception to provide PM service early on the customer's SR will be considered. The criteria for creating an exception task for PM service is detailed in the documents below.

The PM service will also apply to Exadata Storage Server nodes contained within SuperCluster racks.

The following attached articles should be reviewed and followed in order to complete the Exadata Database Machine Preventive Maintenance service:
 - Exadata PM Service Overview (Customer-Ready) - Slide Deck[Last Updated: 08-Jan-2016]
 - Exadata PM Service Overview (Internal Only) - Slide Deck[Last Updated: 08-Jan-2016]
 - Exadata PM Field Service Procedures - Document [Last Updated: 10-Aug-2017*]

Parts required for the PM should be ordered by the FSE approximately 2 weeks prior to the customer scheduled part replacement date. Do NOT order as soon as the PM task is opened, as parts will not be available immediately.  For PM requiring ESM, always order ESM kit FRU's rather than individual ESM FRU's.

Service Action Videos for Reference:

Video Canned Action Plans are available in MP4 format for the physical procedures required by the PM process. These require an MP4 player browser plug-in, such as Apple Quicktime or Real Player. These are linked in the MOS Note for the appropriate procedure:

Note 1681165.1 - How to Remove and Replace the Sun F20 Flash Accelerator Card ESM in an Exadata Storage Cell (V2/X2-2/X2-8).
Note 1527626.1 - How to Remove and Replace the RAID HBA Battery in an Exadata V2/X2-2 DB node and V2/X2-2/X2-8 Storage Cell.
Note 1527626.1 - How to Remove and Replace the RAID HBA Battery in an Exadata X2-8 Database Server.
Note 1528014.1 - How to replace a failed RAID HBA card battery (BBU) on Exadata X3-2, X3-8, X4-2, X4-8 (with X4-2L Storage Cells).  (No video - refer to Note 1561949.1)
Note 1561949.1 - How to install/replace a RAID HBA remote battery (BBU) mounting kit on X3-2, X3-8, X4-2, X4-8 (with X4-2L Storage Cells).

Additional videos are available attached to Note 1444683.1 for Cable Management Arm replacement that may be required during PM Field Service activity.

Note: There are no PM plans for Exadata X5-2, X5-8, X6-2 and X6-8 based systems at this time, due to no consumable components that require replacement within the standard service support life of the product. If this plan changes in the future, the PM documents will be updated to include them at that time.
