Details

Power to server not available

Type

Fault
fault.chassis.domain.boot.power-off-unexpected

Severity

Critical

Description

Message ID: SPX86-8002-2J indicates that the ILOM fault manager has received
an error report indicating power is not available to the server due to a malfunctioning
component detected by the complex programmable logic device (CPLD).

The server is unable to power-on and may be caused by a firmware defect or faulty hardware.
This event can happen at any time, but usually occurs early in the boot process.
Recommendation is to upgrade ILOM firmware prior to any hardware replacement.

The boot process is monitored to make sure that no hangs or unlimited boot retries occur.

Error reports are issued when various milestones in the server boot process are reached.
When a milestone is not reached, a fault is diagnosed so platform services can retry the boot process.

Sun Fire X4800 in the Sun Fire X4800 chassis
Sun Fire X4800 in the Sun Blade 6000 chassis

Recommendation is to upgrade ILOM firmware prior to any hardware replacement.
If upgrade does not resolve problem, then motherboard+blade chassis is the likely suspect.

The chassis-wide service required LED on the server will be illuminated.

All occurances of this fault event must be escalated to TSC.

Bug 16716197 : High field occurrence of CPLD diagnosed power fault SPX86-8002-2J on X3/4 VCORE

Collect a FULL snapshot from the system.

Update system firmware to the latest available version and clear the fault.
Power cycle the system and attempt to power on the system.

If the system can power up and runs normally without any other faults being reported,
then monitor the system for any further issues and do not replace any components.

If the system is still unable to power up, then collect another FULL snapshot.

Replace the motherboard on second occurance of fault event.

TSC engineers should ensure collection of the full ILOM snapshot image
and return of the motherboard using the NCAT/CPAS process.
