Solution Type Sun Alert Sure Solution 2359430.1 : Upgrade of Diameter Signaling Router (DSR) to Release 7.1 or Later Requires Domain Name System (DNS) Port 53 to Be Open
TCP/UDP port 53 must not be blocked between DSR servers for resolution to be successful. In this Document
Applies to:Oracle Communications Diameter Signaling Router (DSR) - Version DSR 7.1.0 to DSR 8.1.1 [Release DSR 7.0 to DSR 8.0]Information in this document applies to any platform. DescriptionAfter upgrade to DSR 7.1, Domain Name System (DNS) is used to resolve server hostnames to IP addresses. Upon "Accept Upgrade" step at the conclusion of software upgrade activity, the full transition to use of DNS will occur. If the DNS port (TCP & UDP 53) is blocked in the operator network for pathways between DSR servers, some inter-server communication will fail. Once the upgrade has been Accepted, rolling back is no longer an option and DNS port blockage in the network will need to be addressed urgently. In most cases, Diameter messaging traffic will be unaffected but the ability to manage DSR will be impaired until DNS resolution is established. OccurrenceCustomers upgrading from DSR releases prior to 7.1 to DSR release 7.1 or later. SymptomsIn some cases during upgrade activity the Network OAM (NOAM) upgrade screen may report that a server fails to complete its upgrade, although checking server's upgrade log indicates its upgrade completed successfully. At the conclusion of system-wide upgrade activity, after performing "Accept Upgrade" step some inter-server communication will fail between certain servers. Alarms for inetrep, inetmerge, or comagent processes may appear. Use of the virtual IP (VIP) to access the Site OAM (SOAM) browser interface may fail. WorkaroundDue to the reliance of Domain Name System (DNS) to resolve the server hostnames to IP addresses, it is imperative that operators ensure the pathways between and among DSR servers--including between different DSR sites--have no filters that would prevent TCP and UDP Port 53 (DNS) traffic for DSR equipment addresses. This should be verified prior to beginning any upgrade activity, and again prior to Accept Upgrade. Refer to My Oracle Support Knowledge document 2357530.1 "Diameter Signaling Router (DSR) : How To Determine if Domain Name System (DNS) Port 53 is Open Between DSR Servers" for additional guidance.
