Description

SPARC M7-8 servers running firmware version 9.8.0.c may fail to power on CMIOU boards. Firmware version 9.8.0.c has been WITHDRAWN and is no longer available for download.

Occurrence

This issue can occur on the following platform:

SPARC Platform

  • SPARC M7-8 Servers with firmware version 9.8.0.c (as delivered in patch 26778704)

To determine the firmware version installed on the system, use the following ILOM command:

      -> show /HOST sysfw_version

      /HOST
      Properties:
      sysfw_version = Sun System Firmware 9.8.0.c 2017/09/06 09:43

Symptoms

If the described issue occurs, the server will fail to power on a CMIOU board.

An ERROR message similar to the following will be displayed in the HOST console:

      2017-10-31 02:07:29 0:00:0> ERROR: /SYS/CMIOU3/CM/CMP: Failed to sign on

and the ILOM command 'show faulty' will contain output similar to the following:

      -> show faulty

Workaround

There is no workaround for this issue. Please see the Resolution below.

Resolution

This issue is addressed on the following platform:

SPARC Platform

  • M7-8 Servers with firmware version 9.8.0.d (as delivered in patch 27185996) or later

Note: Loading new system firmware requires the host to be stopped and restarted to deploy HOST firmware fixes. See <Document:1542610.1> for all information regarding the system firmware upgrade procedure.

History

This is software problem. When CPUs are executing from the fast host flash, a chip reset occurs.
The first instruction returned to the CPU after the reset may be incorrect. This causes the CPU to
end up in RED state, and it doesn't sign on.
