Description

An issue has been identified within Session Border Controllers (SBCs) running Linux-based software (SCZ7.x or ECZ7.x) on AP 4500/3820 devices with QoS NIUs (Network Interface Unit), wherein the SBC will hang periodically for no apparent reason, and no events written to logs.

This Alert document describes the procedure to identify potentially impacted systems, and recommended proactive mitigations.

Occurrence

Impacted Devices

This behavior is specific to AP4500/3820 platform with NIUs using the QoS FPGA, running Linux based releases (7.x).
Impacted NIUs include:

  • 4 port 1G SFP phy card with IPSEC and QOS (part-number: xxx-603-xx or xxx-613-xx)
  • 4 port 1G SFP phy card with QOS (part-number: xxx-606-xx or xxx-616-xx)
  • High capacity transcoding card (part-number: xxx-619-xx)

Identify the Platform

Potential hardware may be verified with the 'show prom-info phy' command:

show prom-info phy
Contents of PHY
Assy, 4 Port SFP with QOS and IPSec
Part Number: 002-0613-58
Serial Number: 151049008345
FunctionalRev: 04.02
BoardRev: 04.00
PCB Family Type: Quad port GiGE SFP PHY
ID: 4 Port GiGE w/QoS & Encryption

If an impacted NIU is found, the Administrator may identify the current FPGA version that is installed using the following commands:

Cx6xx Releases

Use the 'show qos revision' command to check the FPGA version.

ACME SBC# show qos revision
QoS FPGA Hardware Revision is 1.202

Cz7xx Releases

Use the 'show datapath ppx info' command to check the FPGA version.

ACME SBC# show datapath ppx info

4500 ZappPPX Information ==== ====== ===========
======== QoS Stats ===========
QoS FPGA Hardware Revision is 1.202

Identify the Release

If needed, the 'show version image' command may be used to determine if the SBC is running a 7.x release of Linux (SCZ7xx or ECZ7xx).

show version image
Linux (Acme Packet Net-Net 4500) version 3.8.13-el6uek.v3.8.13-118.6.1-cov
Boot line: eth(0,0)sbc:/boot/nnSCZ730m2.64.bz e=1.1.1.3:ffffff00 g=1.1.1.1 u=vxftp pw=vxftp tn=sbc

Symptoms

Impacted SBC nodes may appear to hang periodically, with no apparent reason, and nothing relevant written to logs regarding possible cause.

The following are some of the symptoms attributed to manifestations of this behavior:

  • System has locked up and a reboot required to restore access.
  • Standby System is inaccessible via management and console.

Note: This issue is not specific to active or standby system and can occur on either

This is specific to devices outlined above that have been upgraded from vxWorks release 6.x to Linux release 7.x

Additional symptoms may be outlined within Document 2278470.1, when identified.

Patches

To resolve this behavior, SBC Administrators are advised to upgrade the FPGA to version 2.22 <Patch 24369382> or later.

Note: This FPGA is supported on both 4500 and 3820 with applicable cards above.

These patches may be downloaded using the links above, or from the My Oracle Support (MOS) Portal directly, by connecting to https://support.oracle.com with an internet browser.

  1. Authenticate with the portal using existing MOS credentials.
  2. Select the Patches and Updates tab.
  3. In the Patch Search tab, search by "Number / Name."
  4. Update the value for Patch Name or Number is to the relevant Patch ID above, [ 24369382 ]
  5. Click the Search button.
  6. Select the appropriate installation platform from the available options, and schedule a download.
