Oracle Communications EAGLE (Hardware)
Tekelec

Description

Due to a hardware problem on E5-MASP card, it may fail to assign shelf ID for the shelves on EAGLE. If this happens and if there are no cards other than HIPR/HIPR2 in the shelf, then EAGLE OAM will not communicate with the HIPR/HIPR2 cards in the shelf.

Occurrence

This may occur on an EAGLE node equipped with E5-MASP cards and HIPR/HIPR2 cards. Missing shelf ID is indicated by SHELF LED on the HIPR/HIPR2 cards continuously flashing AMBER. Affected E5-MASP part numbers are

  • 870-2903-01 (REV P or earlier)
  • 870-2903-02 (REV CH or earlier)

If this happens and if there are no cards other than HIPR/HIPR2 cards are there in that shelf, then EAGLE OAM will not communicate with the HIPR/HIPR2 cards in the shelf. This will cause following problems
o HIPR/HIPR2 cards in the shelf will not be displayed by REPT-STAT-XXX commands
o EAGLE OAM will not receive any status update from the HIPR/HIPR2 in the shelf
o EAGLE OAM will not receive trouble or obit from the HIPR/HIPR2 in the shelf
o EAGLE OAM cannot retrieve IMT error stats on the HIPR/HIPR2 in the shelf
o EAGLE OAM cannot update the flash on HIPR/HIPR2 in the shelf

The above problems will not be there if at least one network/application (other than HIPR/HIPR2) card is inserted in the shelf that has HIPR/HIPR2 cards with amber SHELF LED.

Symptoms

Missing shelf ID is indicated by continuously flashing AMBER SHELF LED (SHELF LED not turning green) on the HIPR/HIPR2 cards in the shelf

If all of the following points are true, it indicates a problem with the E5-MASP card which is currently in Standby MASP location and corrective action need to be taken
1. SHELF LED on the HIPR/HIPR2 cards in the shelf is not turning GREEN (SHELF LED stays in SOLID AMBER or continuously flashing AMBER)
2. The shelf is equipped cabled and part of the IMT ring
3. IMT ring is up and running
4. EAGLE is equipped with E5-MASP cards and P/N 870-2903-01 (REV P or earlier) or 870-2903-02 (REV CH or earlier) is present in Standby MASP location.

No action needs to be taken if SHELF LEDs on all HIPR/HIPR cards on all equipped shelves are GREEN.

Workaround

If AMBER (Solid or flashing) SHELF ID LED on the HIPR/HIPR2 cards in any shelf on an EAGLE equipped with E5-MASP cards is observed, then make sure at least one network/application card other than HIPR/HIPR2 is inserted (update the flash on card if it is not currently running flash GPL approved for the release) in that shelf.

Patches

There is no software fix available for this problem. RMA Standby E5-MASP card (if symptoms indicate a problem) to fix the problem.
