Description

SPARC M7-8 and M7-16 systems may erroneously report a 'fpga-uc/TPM' (Trusted Platform Module) hardware error when updating to Sun System Firmware 9.5.4a and using 'start /SYS', 'start /System' or 'start /HOSTx' to start the hosts. This error will cause the upgrade of the firmware to fail.

Occurrence

This issue can occur on the following platform:

SPARC Platform

  • M7-8 and M7-16 Servers with Sun System Firmware version 9.5.4a

Notes:

1. No other systems or platforms are affected by this issue.

2. To determine the firmware version installed on the system, use the following ILOM command from the active SP:

      -> show /System sysfw_version
      /System
        Properties:
          sysfw_version = Sun System Firmware 9.5.3 2015/11/25 09:17

Symptoms

When this issue occurs, the following errors will be seen.

- The above 'show faulty' output is an example from the SP running 9.5.4.a.
- After upgrading to 9.5.4.a, the host firmware may not get upgraded.
- Also, many other components may be reported faulted with 'fault.chassis.voltage.failing/fault.chassis.voltage.isolated'.

Note: The host firmware version for all hosts should be checked to ensure the firmware version is as expected after an upgrade.

Workaround

Note: If this issue has already occurred on a system, please call Oracle Support for assistance.

To prevent this issue from occurring:

1. Avoid using 'start /SYS' or 'start /System' to start the hosts after upgrading the firmware.

2. Before starting a host after a change of firmware revision to the affected version, ensure the host firmware has been updated and the 'operation_in_progress' is 'none'. This should be checked for all hosts.

For example, host1 running host firmware 9.5.4.a:

      -> show -t /Servers/PDomains/PDomain_1/SYSTEM/Firmware/Other_Firmware/ version
      Target | Property | Value
      ----------------------------------------+-----------------------------------------------+--------------------------------------------------------------------
      /Servers/PDomains/PDomain_1/SYSTEM/ | version | 3.2.5.90.a Firmware/Other_Firmware/Firmware_0 | |
      /Servers/PDomains/PDomain_1/SYSTEM/ | version | POST 5.3.4 2016/02/20 14:07 Firmware/Other_Firmware/Firmware_1 | |
      /Servers/PDomains/PDomain_1/SYSTEM/ | version | OpenBoot 4.38.4.a 2016/03/11 11:12 Firmware/Other_Firmware/Firmware_2 | |
      /Servers/PDomains/PDomain_1/SYSTEM/ | version | Hypervisor 1.15.4 2016/02/20 14:09 Firmware/Other_Firmware/Firmware_3 | |

AND

      -> show /Servers/PDomains/PDomain_1/HOST operation_in_progress

      /Servers/PDomains/PDomain_1/HOST
      Properties:
      operation_in_progress = none

Resolution

This issue is addressed on the following platform:

SPARC Platform

  • M7-8 and M7-16 Servers with Firmware version 9.7.1.b (as delivered in patch 23291634 ) or later

Note: Ensure the host firmware has been updated before starting any host, and avoid using 'start /SYS' and 'start /System' to start hosts after the firmware update.

See <Document:2149092.1> for additional information.
