Description

When SPARC M5-32 and M6-32 Servers with Sun System Firmware 9.3.0.c and later releases are discovered using Oracle Enterprise Manager OpsCenter 12c Release 2, the status of configured Physical Domains (PDomains) are erroneously shown as UNCONFIGURED, causing the Operating System of these domains to fail to be provisioned. The monitoring capabilities of the service processor and the physical domains show erroneous status and data as described under the "Symptoms" section below.

Occurrence

This issue can occur in the following releases for SPARC M5-32 and M6-32 Servers with Sun System Firmware 9.3.0.c and later:

SPARC Platform:

  • Ops Center 12c Release 2 (for Solaris 10)
  • Ops Center 12c Release 2 (for Solaris 11)

x86 Platform:

  • Ops Center 12c Release 2 (for Solaris 10)
  • Ops Center 12c Release 2 (for Solaris 11)

Linux Platform:

  • Ops Center 12c Release 2 (for Oracle Linux 5.5 through 6.4)
  • Ops Center 12c Release 2 (for RedHat Enterprise Linux 5.5 through 6.4)

Note: To determine the Sun System firmware version on the system, execute the following command:

From the Operating System:

 # prtdiag -v | grep Firmware
   Sun System Firmware 9.3.0.f 2015/01/13 20:12

From ILOM:

    -> show System/ system_fw_version

          /System
            Properties:
                system_fw_version = Sun System Firmware 9.4.2 2015/04/10 12:06

Symptoms

If the described issue occurs, the "Summary" tab of the physical domains in the Ops Center Browser User Interface (BUI)  (under the "Assets" accordion, "All Assets" tree view) will erroneously show the 'Operational Status' of the affected domains as 'UNCONFIGURED', when the physical domains are actually in a configured state.

The actual status of the physical domains can be verified on the Service Processor command line as follows:

A) Configured physical domain (PDomain):

    -> show /Servers/PDomains/PDomain_1/HOST/ dcus_assigned

      /Servers/PDomains/PDomain_1/HOST
        Properties:
            dcus_assigned = (none)

PDomain_0 is in a configured state. When this issue occurs, the Oracle Enterprise Manager Ops Center 12c Release 2 BUI will show PDomain_0 as 'UNCONFIGURED'.

B) Unconfigured PDomain: PDomain_1 is in an unconfigured state.

    -> show /Servers/PDomains/PDomain_0/HOST/ dcus_assigned

      /Servers/PDomains/PDomain_0/HOST
        Properties:
            dcus_assigned = /SYS/DCU0

When this issue occurs, OSP on PDomains may Fail, and there may be other symptoms as shown below, relating to missing data in other tabs of the Ops Center BUI:

For the Service Processor:

 Summary Tab: Each of the domains is shown as powered off, when they are in fact powered on.
 Hardware Tab: The image of the server is missing.

For the Physical Domains:

  Dashboard Tab: Operational status erroneously shows UNCONFIGURED, and CPU sockets and memory fields may be missing.
  Summary Tab: Missing processor, memory and firmware details; incorrect power state.
  Hardware Tab: Missing data for processors, memory, power, cooling.
  Energy Tab: Missing power supply information and fan Information.

Workaround

To work around this issue, downgrade the System Firmware version to 9.2.1.c or lower. This can be done in two ways:

Option A) Using Ops Center:

1. Create a new Firmware profile under 'Profiles and Policies' of the Plan Management Accordion.

2. In the 'Firmware Configuration' window of the "Create Profile" Wizard, check the 'Force Downgrade' option.

3. In the 'Select Firmware Images' window of the "Create Profile" Wizard, choose the firmware 'Sun_System_Firmware-9_2_1_c-SPARC_M5-32_M6-32.pkg' or lower.

4. Select the corresponding plan under 'Deployment Plans' of the Plan Management accordion and click on "Apply Deployment Plan" from the "Actions" section of the selected plan.

5. Select the M-series servers that need their System Firmware to be downgraded and apply the plan.

Option B) Through the Service Processor Command line interface:

Reference the following documentation for the downgrade instructions:

Note: For the workaround to take effect, either of the following operations should be performed through Oracle Enterprise Manager Ops Center's Browser User Interface:

1. Click on the Refresh button under the Actions Panel of the M-series server's Service Processor and each of the physical domains.

OR

2. Re-discover the M-series servers.

Note: Delete the asset prior to re-discovery.

Resolution
