Applies to:

Sun StorageTek Enterprise Library Software (ELS) - Version 7.1 to 7.2 [Release 7.0]
Sun StorageTek Storage Management Component (SMC) - Version 7.1 to 7.2 [Release 7.0]
Sun StorageTek VSM5 System
IBM z/OS on System z

Description

After applying the PTF(s) to correct the problem reported by incident 19452001, customers running in an ELS client/server or VLE environment can encounter SMC client TCP/IP communication timeouts due to extended SMC server wait times.

The PTFs in error are:

  • ELS 7.1 – L1H185S
  • ELS 7.2 – L1H185T

Occurrence

TCP/IP communication timeouts are most likely to occur with increased workload.

Symptoms

The following message sequence may be observed as a result of the client timeout:

SMC0128 TAPEPLEX,error:, Error=TCP/IP timeout SMC comm RC=740

SMC0260 TAPEPLEX tplxnam commpath sys1 inactive; RC=740, TCP/IP timeout

SMC0226 Path switch from SERVER=sys1 to sys2 for TAPEPLEX=tplxnam

Workaround

The workaround for this error is to perform one of the following:

1. Do not install the PTF(s) which have been identified as "in error".

2. Restore the SEALINK load library from a known backup which does not include the PTF in error, and then add all available ELS maintenance, excluding the PTF in error.

3. Reinstall the ELS base product, and then add all available ELS maintenance, excluding the PTF in error.

Patches

The fixing PTFs, L1H1873 for ELS 7.1 and L1H1874 for ELS 7.2, will be available January 2015.
