Description

Oracle Virtual Machine (OVM) Server for SPARC Guest Domains on SPARC T4/T5/M5/M6 series servers running Sun System Firmware releases 8.5.1.b and 9.2.1.B/C may not accept console input and may appear hung after running the command 'ldm unbind <ldom>'.

Note: Input at the Open Boot PROM (OBP) will still function normally.

Occurrence

This issue can occur on the following platforms:

SPARC Platform:

  • SPARC T4-1 with Sun System Firmware 8.5.1.b (as delivered in patch 151295-02)
  • SPARC T4-2 with Sun System Firmware 8.5.1.b (as delivered in patch 151296-02)
  • SPARC T4-4 with Sun System Firmware 8.5.1.b (as delivered in patch 151297-02)
  • SPARC T4-1B with Sun System Firmware 8.5.1.b (as delivered in patch 151298-02)
  • Netra SPARC T4-1 with Sun System Firmware 8.5.1.b (as delivered in patch 151299-02)
  • Netra SPARC T4-2 with Sun System Firmware 8.5.1.b (as delivered in patch 151300-02)
  • Netra SPARC T4-1B with Sun System Firmware 8.5.1.b (as delivered in patch 151301-02)
  • SPARC T5-2 with Sun System Firmware 9.2.1.B (as delivered in patch Patch 19264421)
  • SPARC T5-4+T5-8 with Sun System Firmware 9.2.1.B  (as delivered in patch 19264423)
  • SPARC T5-1B with Sun System Firmware 9.2.1.B (as delivered in patch 19264419)
  • Netra SPARC T5-1B with Sun System Firmware 9.2.1.B (as delivered in patch 19264425)
  • SPARC M5-32+M6-32 with Sun System Firmware 9.2.1.B (as delivered in patch 19264417)
  • SPARC M5-32+M6-32 with Sun System Firmware 9.2.1.C (as delivered in patch 19525299)

Note: This issue has been observed after running the 'ldm unbind <ldom>' command which releases resources bound to a configured guest domain.

To determine the firmware version on the system, the following command can be used:

    # prtdiag -v | grep Firmware
    Sun System Firmware 8.2.0.a 2012/05/11 07:34

Symptoms

If the described issue occurs, the console connection (ie 'telnet localhost 5000') to the guest domain will not accept any input, and may appear hung, although any console output will still be displayed normally.  This will only happen if the guest domain has had an unbind operation since the last host power cycle.  Input at the OBP prompt will still function normally.

Example:

    root@primary:~# telnet localhost 5000

    Trying 127.0.0.1...
    Connected to localhost.
    Escape character is '^]'.

Connecting to console "primary" in group "primary" ....
Press ~? for control options ..
    <<< no input accepted >>>

Workaround

If this issue has occurred, it is necessary to power cycle the system to regain control of the guest domain console.
