Description
A memory leak in the nxge(7D) driver for ZFS Storage Appliance Software 2011.1.4.2 through 2011.1.8.1 may cause ZFS Storage Appliance service outages on models 7110, 7210, 7310 and 7410.
Occurrence
This issue can occur in the following release:
- ZFS Storage Appliance Software 2011.1.4.2 through 2011.1.8.1
Notes:
1. This issue only affects ZFS Storage Appliance models 7110, 7210, 7310 and 7410.
2. ZFS Storage Appliance Software 2013.X is not impacted by this issue. To determine the software release on one of these systems, do the following from the Browser User Interface (BUI) to access "info" about the release name:
1) Navigate to: Maintenance -> System
2) Click on the "i" next to the "Current System Software" entry in the table of available releases.
A pop-up will show the release version, ie: "2011.1.4.2"
3. Heavy network traffic is a contributing factor to this issue.
Symptoms
Symptoms may vary, and typical examples may include:
- NFS client timeouts
- Shortage of ARC (Adaptive Replacement Cache) loaned-bytes
Note: Oracle support will be able to confirm the underlying cause by directly observing STREAMS buffer allocation, using mdb(1M) from the appliance shell.
Workaround
This issue is addressed in the following release:
- ZFS Storage Appliance Software 2011.1.9.0 or later
History
13-Mar-2014: Document released; status: Workaround
31-Jul-2014: Update released, issue is Resolved
The problem was introduced between 2011.04.24.4.0,1-1.21 and
2011.04.24.4.0,1-2.21.7.1. It hasn't been possible to determine
at exactly what point the regression was introduced.
The underlying symptom of this bug is that STREAMS dblks are allocated and
never freed. The number allocated can be seen with the following mdb command:
::walk streams_dblk_esb ! wc -l
If this increases over time, this issue is affecting the system.
This memory leak issue for 15824288 only applies when LSO is
enabled, but turning LSO off, provoked another leak 15662656.
Both these bugs are being fixed together in 2011.1.9.0
