Description

On Sun SPARC Enterprise M4000/M5000/M8000/M9000 Systems or the Motherboard Unit (MBU) on a Sun SPARC Enterprise M3000 Server running Firmware version XCP 1115, the eXtended System Control Facility (XSCFU) may erroneously be marked "Degraded" after running the 'restoredefaults' command.

Occurrence

This issue can occur in the following releases:

SPARC Platform

  • Sun SPARC Enterprise M3000 Server MBU with XCP firmware version 1115
  • Sun SPARC Enterprise M4000 Server with XCP firmware version 1115
  • Sun SPARC Enterprise M5000 Server with XCP firmware version 1115
  • Sun SPARC Enterprise M8000 Server with XCP firmware version 1115
  • Sun SPARC Enterprise M9000-32 Server with XCP firmware version 1115
  • Sun SPARC Enterprise M9000-64 Server with XCP firmware version 1115

Note: This issue only occurs on systems running XCP firmware version 1115 that have executed the 'restoredefaults' command.

To determine the XCP firmware version on a system, run the following command at the XSCFU shell:

    XSCF> version -c xcp

XCP 1115 output will appear similar to the following:

    XSCF> version -c xcp
    XSCF#0 (Active )
    XCP0 (Reserve): 1115
    XCP1 (Current): 1115
    XSCF>

Symptoms

If the described issue occurs, an error is logged and XSCFU/MBU is marked as "Degraded". The error is seen within 16 hours after running "restoredefaults -c factory".  The error will be repeated every 14-16 hours.  Below is an example error message from a M3000 system:

    XSCF> showstatus
    *   MBU_A Status:Degraded;

    XSCF> fmadm faulty

Workaround

To avoid this issue, do not execute the "restoredefaults" command.

To work around this issue until the XCP1116 upgrade can be installed, the condition can be corrected by using the "clearfault" command to clear the fault and then XCP firmware version 1115 can be re-installed. Below is an example procedure for a M3000 system:

1. Make sure that the XCP1115 image is available on the system. (Obtain the image first, if necessary).

    XSCF> getflashimage -l
    Existing versions:
    Version              Size     Date
    IKXCP1115.tar.gz   45783823  Fri Jun 21 07:40:26 JST 2013

2. Clear the fault from normal mode (new in 1115).

    XSCF> clearfault /MBU_A
This command must only be used at the request of a product support engineer.
    Continue? [y|n]: y
    XSCF> showstatus
No failures found in System Initialization.

3. Re-install XCP1115.

    XSCF> flashupdate -c update -m xcp -s 1115
The XSCF will be reset. Continue? [y|n] :y
Checking the XCP image file, please wait a minute
XCP update is started (XCP version=1115:last version=1115)
OpenBoot PROM update is started (OpenBoot PROM version=02320000)
OpenBoot PROM update has been completed (OpenBoot PROM version=02320000)
    XSCF update is started (XSCFU=0,bank=1,XCP version=1115:last version=1115)
    ...

4. Do not execute the 'restoredefaults' command.

This issue is addressed in the following releases:
