Certain Brocade switches (listed below) may panic ....

1. Impact

Certain Brocade switches (listed below) may panic when monitored by host based SAN monitoring software. As a result, temporary loss of connectivity to SAN devices may occur.

2. Contributing Factors

This issue can occur on the following Brocade platforms:

  • SG-XSWBRO200E 8P SilkWorm 200E switch without FOS 5.2.1b (patch 124898-03)
  • SG-XSWBRO3250 SilkWorm 3250 switch without FOS 5.2.1b (patch 124898-03)
  • SG-XSWBRO3850 SilkWorm 3850 switch without FOS 5.2.1b (patch 124898-03)
  • SG-XSWBRO3900 SilkWorm 3900 switch without FOS 5.2.1b (patch 124898-03)
  • SG-XSWBRO4100-16P SilkWorm 4100 switch with 16 ports without FOS 5.2.1b (patch 124898-03)
  • SG-XSWBRO4100-32P SilkWorm 4100 switch with 32 ports without FOS 5.2.1b (patch 124898-03)
  • SG-XSWBRO4900 SilkWorm 4900 switch without FOS 5.2.1b (patch 124898-03)
  • SG-XSWBRO24K-32P SilkWorm 24000 Director without FOS 5.2.1b (patch 124898-03)
  • SG-XSWBRO48ZP Silkworm 48000 Director without FOS 5.2.1b (patch 124898-03)
  • SG-XSWBRO12000-32P/64P SilkWorm 12000 Director without FOS 5.0.5d (patch 119552-06)

3. Symptoms

Should the described issue occur, the switch will panic and reboot. Details of the activity will be logged in the switch internal logs and can be viewed after the reboot:

"errdump" or "errshow" on the affected switch/CP will show entries indicating that rpcd terminated.
[KSWD-1003], 1869,, WARNING, Silkworm24000, kSWD: Detected unexpected termination of: ''[11]rpcd:

Alternatively, a "pdshow" output will contain details that rpcd terminated:

    Dead pid: 797, process: rpcd0
flags: 1348, pending sigs: 0
exit_code: 11, exit_sig: 17
parent_sig: 0
kSWD: Prepare to reboot/failover in a moment...

The issue is triggered by a host based SAN/switch management application, retrieving link incident record (LIRR) information.

4. Workaround

To work around this issue, avoid monitoring the switch using applications that collect LIRR information. As an alternative, Webtools and CLI are not known to collect LIRR information.

5. Resolution

This issue is addressed in the following releases:

  • Brocade FOS 5.2.1b (patch 124898-03 or later) for the 200E, 3250, 3850, 3900, 4100, 4900 24000, and 48000 switches and directors.
  • Brocade FOS 5.0.5d (patch 119552-06 or later) for the 12000 Director.
