RTD = Real Tape Drive

Symptoms

After firmware upgrade the RTD did not come online to the VSM6 device and the VSM6 rebooted the nodes.

In SLConsole of the SL8500 was showing us that the port was configured as 'FICON'.

Drive Status

 

Changes

 The drive upgrade was from 4.12.106 to 4.13.101.

Cause

The problem was caused during a drive firmware upgrade from 4.12.106 to 4.13.101. An error occurred and Port A and B did not were not seen as FICON channels.
The Force DUMP on T10000D show us that the Port A and B was configured with FIBRE.

Solution

The tape drive was replaced.

Note:. If the DUMP of the Drive is showing FIBRE, do not try to put the RTD online again. It can reboot the VSM6.
