Symptoms

After creating a file on a NFS share, a 'ls -l' doesn't report the time that the file was created.  Only the day and year.

# ls -l filea
-rw-r--r--. 1 4294967294 4294967294 0 Apr 13 2018 filea

After some time, the file reports the time the file was created.

# ls -l filea
-rw-r--r--. 1 4294967294 4294967294 0 Apr 13 12:16 filea

Cause

The root cause is that the NFS server date is ahead of the client that is mounting the share.

Since the time that the file was created is in the 'future' (to the client), it is unable to display the timestamp until it has past that time.

Solution

Ensure that the NFS server and client are using the same NTP server.
