Symptoms

Upgrading VEDSR based IDIH system, APP and MED servers fail upgrade attempt.

The fdconfig.log populated over upgrade indicates errors showing Background Task state is failed for both the application and mediation servers, with text suggesting timeout.

Example entries for app (with timestamps removed):
      INFO log.ThreadManager <runStep> - Monitoring (in progress): Upgrade Server [RMS ip: <target_IP> guest: <target_hostname>] with apps-#.#.#.#_#.#.#-x86_64 on localPMAC elapsed: 61
      ERROR log.pmac <runStep checkStep> - Background Task state is failed for step id=33, bgTask=482

Similar entries will appear for mediation (med) server.

Cause

The upgrade documentation includes a shortcut allowing copying of the original vedsr_idih.xml file used for installation, then simply adapting it for use in the upgrade. Release-over-release, the content may have changed which can lead to this condition.
Comparing upgrade xml file used for the upgrade activity--as adapted from original install xml file--against the vedsr_idih_upgrade.xml.template provided with target (mediation) software reveals differences in xml content and syntax.

Solution

Follow the software upgrade documentation steps for the scenario where the original vedsr_idih.xml install file is not available. This directs the user to instead copy and adapt the upgrade template for use. The content in the original vedsr_idih.xml file can be used as a reference.
