Symptoms

The Browser User Interface (BUI) Admin shows DNS servers offline, with a simulated amber LED.

Other visible symptoms are:

ZFSStor:configuration services dns> select server-002
ZFSStor:configuration services server-002> show
Properties:
                     address = XX.XX.XX.XX
                      status = offline             <<<
                         rtt = unavailable         <<<
                     err_msg = Error 0             <<<

Additionally the following message is displays when configuring DNS service in the BUI

'Server XX.XX.XX.XX: Error 0. Are you sure you want to apply the current settings?'

Changes

 Newly added DNS servers, especially Windows Server 2016.

Cause

The ZFS appliance uses a particular DNS query to test whether servers are online and responding, as follows:

DNS: ----- DNS Header -----
DNS:
DNS: Query ID = 43293
DNS: Opcode: Query
DNS:
DNS: 1 question(s)
DNS: Domain Name: dns-server-ping.test.
DNS: Class: 1 (Internet)
DNS: Type: 6 (Start Of a zone Authority)
DNS:

Some DNS servers, notably Windows Server 2016, do not have the test zone installed by default, and are therefore unable to resolve this query.

Solution

Create a forward lookup zone for "dns-server-ping.test" that will resolve the above SOA query. Most DNS servers should have an example of this zone.

The DNS servers appear to work in this state, but you will lose the ability to check whether they are online, or display their current latency.
