Symptoms

A disk drive replacement fails. Multiple disks inserted into the same slot show no lit LEDs, are not seen at any operating system level, and the last disk is shown as ABSENT or REMOVED status.

Changes

Cause

On certain disk trays, there are microfuses for each disk drive slot on the midplane of the disk tray. The microfuse may be blown.

Solution

If the microfuse for a particular slot is blownthe only recourse is to swap out the disk tray.

The typical process is to reboot the head and power cycle the disk tray. If that does not resolve the slot issue, because it is part of the disk midplane, the entire disk tray chassis must be replaced.
