Created from <SR 3-16567237351>

Applies to:

Solaris x64/x86 Operating System - Version 11.3 to 11.3 [Release 11.0]
Exadata X7-2 Hardware - Version All Versions and later
x86 64 bit
Attempts to install Oracle Solaris 11.3 on X7-2 might fail

Symptoms

Unable to boot a X7-2 system from DVD, network or USB using Oracle Solaris 11.3 SRU 23 (minimum).

The following are the last messages seen on the console:

Loading cd0/platform/i86pc/kernel/amd64/unix: 0%...done.
Loading cd0/platform/i86pc/amd64/boot_archive: 0%.....95%...done.

After this, the boot does not progress further.

With JAVA Remote Console or an attached monitor, the following errors are seen:

WARNING: gfxp_fb_ioctl: Could not initialize console
WARNING: terminal emulator : Compatible fb not found
WARNING: consconfig: terminal emulator failed to initialize

Cause

This issue is described in X7-2 release notes in 'known Solaris issues' section :
    https://docs.oracle.com/cd/E72435_01/html/E72446/gsefs.html#scrolltoc

Solution

The following workaround is available:

While booting, modify grub2 menu and add this to the multiboot line:  -B console=ttya,ttya-mode=\"115200,8,n,1,-\"

For details about how to edit the multiboot see:

x86: Adding Kernel Arguments by Editing the GRUB Menu at Boot Time

https://docs.oracle.com/cd/E53394_01/html/E54742/glyas.html

Permanent fix:  At this time, only a Interim Diagnostic Relief (IDR) is available which must be requested from Oracle Support.
