Solution

If there is DOP access, the ISP master can be switched by clicking on the Switch ISP Master button under the Subsystem Debug Screen.  The ISP information can be found under the Configuration/Status Screen, ISP Information Screen.

Reference the VSM5 Installation and Service Guide (VSM5 I & S Guide) for detailed information on the DOP software required, VSM connectivity, IP addresses and the ISP card(s).

1. Verify the proper DOP software used to access the VSM is installed on the laptop.

2. Verify a ping of the VSM IP address or attempt a vshell connection.

3. If a ping or vshell fails, verify the laptop IP address configuration and ethernet cable connectivity.

4. If the above is verified and still no connectivity, then try the workaround to switch the ISP Master.

A workaround and information for reseating the PB card(s) to switch the ISP Master when there is no DOP access is as follows.

1. A VSM5 rear view can be found in the VSM5 I & S Guide figure A-70 that shows the location of PB-0 and PB-1.  PB0 and 1 hold the BIOS battery for the ISP cards.  PB0 is associated with ISP0 and PB-1 is associated with ISP1.  PB-1 for ISP1 is on the left-hand side and PB-0 for ISP0 is on the right-hand side as shown in figure A-70. Caution must be taken when reseating these cards (1-1.5 inch in height).  Make certain when reconnecting these small cards, to get the pins aligned properly.

2. Beginning with PB-1, disconnect the card and wait 45-60 seconds before reconnecting.  The ISP Master will take approximately 90-120 seconds to switch.

3. Verify a ping of the VSM IP address or attempt to connect to DOP with a new browser session.  If successful, then no further action is necessary.

4. If still no access to the DOP, then perform the same procedure to reseat the PB-0 card.

5. Upon exhausting all methods above to access the DOP, then the AHUB may be faulty and need to be replaced.

Notes

The A-hub and ISP3A Card LED 1 and LED 2 Status Indications can be found in table A-9 and figure A-77 in the VSM5 I & S Guide.

If the ISP card is suspected to be faulty, perform the replacement procedure as outlined under the Replacing an ISP Card section in the VSM5 I & S Guide.

If the A-hub is suspected to be faulty due to no access to the VSM entirely, then replace the A-hub card assembly as outlined in the VSM5 I & S Guide.

It is possible to switch the ISP Master from the The Virtual Initialization Program (VIP).  Caution should be taken while running VIP when the VSM is operational to the customer as certain procedures could make the VSM unavailable.  It is highly recommended to obtain the VSM logs and engage the virtual tape TSC backline when considering to switch the ISP from VIP.
