Symptoms

Attempts to create a hardware RAID volume with disks attached to the 8-Port 12Gbps SAS-3 HBA(Estes) HBA result in an error and are not created.

Using the sas3ircu utility to create a single disk stripe you will see the following error message:

#sas3ircu 0 create 0 1:0
Avago Technologies SAS3 IR Configuration Utility.
Version 12.00.00.00 (2015.11.19)
Copyright (c) 2009-2015 Avago Technologies. All rights reserved.

SAS3IRCU: The CREATE command is not supported by the firmware currently loaded on controller 0.

Using the raidconfig utility which is part of Oracle Hardware Management Pack(OHMP)

#raidconfig create raid -c c0 --level 0 -d c0d0
Option is not supported --c

Cause

The firmware supported on these cards is of the type IT(initiator-target) and does not support integrated RAID. IR(integrated raid) firmware is not supported for this HBA

Solution

If there is a need to create hardware RAID volumes then the 8-Port 12Gbps SAS-3 RAID HBA(Aspen) or 16-Port 12Gbps SAS-3 RAID HBA(Vail) should be used.

Otherwise a software RAID solution can be used.
