Solution Type Problem Resolution Sure Solution 2330983.1 : T10000D - Permanent Read Errors Due To Read Accumulation Mode Being Disabled
In this Document
Created from <SR 3-16198857331> Applies to:StorageTek T10000D Tape Drive - Version All Versions and laterInformation in this document applies to any platform. SymptomsPerm read errors on T10000D Tape Drives. CauseRead Accumulation Mode may be disabled. Repair and new-build testers have been checked and verified that drives ship with read accumulation mode enabled. The 4.10.106 code release implemented read accumulation mode and enabled the function in the drive. All subsequent code releases after 4.10.106 do not modify the existing setting on the drive. Therefore, if 4.10.106 code release was never loaded on the drive and the drive shipped before the testers were set to enable the setting, read accumulation will not be enabled. The Read Accumulation ON config was implemented in the factory on 11/18/2016, corresponding to serial number 6850. SolutionPermanent Read Errors Due To Read Accumulation Mode Being Disabled. Multiple account have experienced perm read errors on T10000D drives that can be attributed to the fact that the drive has Read Accumulation Mode disabled. If this feature is disabled the drive has much less capability to read tapes, especially legacy written tapes. It is critical that read accumulation mode be enabled on T10000D tape drives in order to have the best opportunity for reading tapes. The mechanism that disabled this feature is still under investigation at this time. If you get an Service Request for a permanent read error, verify that the drive has "read accumulation mode" enabled. If it is enabled and the drive is still having difficulty reading tapes then the drive can be considered for replacement. To verify that if Read Accumulation is enabled, the drive can be online and the Sys Admin or CSE version of VOP can be used: 1. Connect to the drive with VOP. 2. Select Retrieve>Drive Data>Maintenance. 3. Verify that Read Accumulation is Enabled. See attached screen shots. The customer or FE can enable this feature using the 2.4 client version of VOP. (Available for download on MOS) The drive will need to be offline from the host as you will be taking the drive internally offline to make these changes. The steps to enable the read accumulation feature are as follows: 1. Connect to the drive. 2. Set the drive offline. Drive Operations>Set Offline 3. Change the configuration. Configure>Drive Data>Maintenance 4. Set all 3 settings to enabled. 4. Click Commit. The drive will IPL and come back online with the new settings. 5. Verify the new settings are in place. Retrieve>Drive Data>Maintenance.
Additional informaton - A script is available for SDP2 accounts running on 2.4 on higher software. This script will identify any T10000D drives that have read accumulation mode disabled. - It is possible to enable read accumulation mode in the drive using telnet/ssh commands. Contact technical support for this process. The process is only available to Oracle employees as an internal password is required.
