Applies to:

Private Cloud Appliance - Version 1.0.1 and later
Private Cloud Appliance X7-2 Server Upgrade
Linux x86-64

Symptoms

On Oracle Private Cloud Appliance, when attempting to provision or reprovision a compute node, it installs HMP and then PXE boots to install the Oracle VM Server Software.

At the end of the Oracle VM Server Installation, the compute node reboots, but loads again the OVS software installation through PXE instead of booting from its local disk. This repeats indefinitely.

The node is finally marked dead/DEAD and provisioning fails.

If a new provisioning job is submittted and the Graphical Console is open through the ILOM Web Console of the Compute Node, one can notice during HMP installation :

 A disk is missing

Cause

There is a missing, failed or removed disk from the compute node. This can be verified by looking at the LSI load screen during the boot process.

Therefore HMP does not create the Raid device it should, and therefore after OVM installation there are no valid boot devices on the Compute Node and it falls back to PXE boot again.

Solution

Replace the failed / Missing disk and re-submit a reprovision job using e.g. :

# pca-admin reprovision compute-node ovcacnXXr1
